Inside Out (2015) is one of the best Pixar films in recent years.
In addition to earning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, it was one of Pixar’s last successes before COVID and performed vastly better than Disney Pixar films today. Disney California Adventure Park in California has even seen an attraction (Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind) based on the movie about personified emotions added to its park.
The success and love for the 2015 Pixar film have propelled Walt Disney Studios into announcing their plans to release a sequel. Due to the current strikes in Hollywood, it seems unlikely that it will maintain its June 14, 2024 release date for theaters. But here’s what we know (and can expect) so far.
Amy Poehler is confirmed to be reprising her role as Joy, the main emotion/character in the original film. Other confirmed stars returning are Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, and Diane Lane as Jillian (Riley’s mother).
However, it has yet to be announced whether Kaitlyn Dias, who voiced Riley in 2015, will be reprising her role for the Pixar sequel.
Unfortunately, we know that Mindy Kaling will not be returning as Disgust, and Bill Hader will not be returning to play Fear. This is rumored to be due to contract issues, including Amy Poehler being paid 20 times more than the rest of the cast.
It’s also expected that there will be new characters and emotions (we are talking about a teenage version of Riley, after all). Pixar CCO Pete Docter revealed that the sequel could have up to 27 new emotions.
He also told Variety the following:
“As for ‘Inside Out,’ a bunch more emotions get to come in. It’s not just the five we saw in the first film. The team on that one put together a really great story that I think also has real depth and meaning to it. So fingers crossed that people like it.”
There is currently no trailer for the upcoming Inside Out (2015) sequel, and as stated previously, it could be released later than expected.
The Pixar movie will be directed by Kelsey Mann – who has previously worked on The Good Dinosaur (2015), Onward (2020), and Lightyear (2022), although none of these were in a directorial role.
Inside Out 2 (2024) will be written by Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote the script for the original Inside Out (2015). However, the current writer’s strike could shake up who writes what and how writing credits will be distributed.
Until the end of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes in Hollywood, Disney fans can patiently wait and hope that Inside Out 2 (2024) will give us the best Disney and Pixar Animation in years!
