Out of each Walt Disney World theme park (the remaining three being Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and EPCOT), Hollywood Studios undoubtedly has the biggest Star Wars presence.

First, there was the Star Tours attraction and various Star Wars character meet-and-greets. But in 2019, Walt Disney Imagineering unveiled one of its most ambitious projects to date, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Galaxy’s Edge is home to many character interactions, including Kylo Ren, Rey, Chewbacca, The Mandalorian, and more.

But this Disney theme park area is also home to two unique attractions. We’re talking, of course, about Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

Each Disney experience strives to be magical, and these Star Wars rides are no different. But they’re set apart by one thing: the sheer level of immersion.

Walt Disney Imagineering took great pains to make Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run as extraordinary as possible, and they did not disappoint.

As a result, Rise of the Resistance has been one of Walt Disney World Resort’s most popular attractions ever since it first opened in 2019. It’s so popular that when it first opened, Walt Disney World had to implement an entirely new queue system: the virtual queue.

What’s Disney’s Virtual Queue? How Does It Work? We’re So Glad You Asked…

Virtual queues work by giving guests a timed chance to reserve a spot in a virtual line, so guests can experience the rest of a Disney Park’s offerings while technically waiting for their place on the latest attraction.

The virtual queue is currently used for Magic Kingdom’s TRON Lightcycle Run and EPCOT’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind attractions. But it can’t be denied that the virtual queue can be confusing for those who aren’t familiar with it and that sometimes guests can miss out when the virtual queue spots fill up incredibly quickly.

So, when Rise of the Resistance stopped requiring a virtual queue in 2021, guests were thrilled…but perhaps each Star Wars fan began celebrating a tad too soon…

As of 2023, the virtual line is returning for this beloved Star Wars attraction for a limited time.

During Disney Jollywood Nights, an upcoming special ticketed event taking place on select nights in Hollywood Studios, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will be implementing the virtual queue system once again, and the standby line will be totally unavailable.

That being said, during regular operating hours, this beloved attraction will still implement the standby queue.

We want to hear from our readers! How do you feel about Disney reverting Rise of the Resistance back into a Virtual Queue-only attraction? Let Disney Dining know in the comments!
