Exciting news for fans of Universal Studios theme parks and the Fast & Furious mega movie franchise! Universal Studios Hollywood just announced that no more speculation is necessary because their “new Fast & Furious-themed roller coaster is officially under construction!” Various rumors about this possibility had been circulating, but Guests were thrilled to learn that this time, the rumors were actually true.
Here’s what we know so far…
Based on leaked theme park information that is now confirmed to be 100% authentic, the name of the epic rollercoaster will be “Fast and Furious – Hollywood Drift.” Late last year, Screamscape.com managed to obtain concept art for Universal Studios Hollywood‘s newest attraction and offered a ton of insight into the experience.
The track looks pretty terrifying from the concept art. The hub of the ride, where Guests load on and off, sits at the quasi-center of the track as the track extends outwards to either side and above. The most harrowing part draws the eye first. A C-curve track extends up into the air and abruptly stops, only open air, and no further track extends beyond it.
The ride vehicles are (naturally) cars, and from the looks of the design, have individual swiveling capabilities! So once the pack of racers reaches the dead-end open-air section of the track, they presumably pivot and turn back the other way, now with the leading car in the back and the final car in the front. The rest of the track continues around and further into other lots of the theme park with more rises and drops along the way.
Screamscape.com notes that one of Universal Orlando Resort‘s rides, Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, also features cars with a controlled spin mechanism. The “Fast & Furious – Hollywood Drift” coaster is supposedly being designed by the Harry Potter ride‘s engineer as well. So if you’ve ridden the Florida attraction, it may give you some insight into the new Hollywood one.
No word yet on when the new Universal Hollywood ride will open.
