Critics of the Walt Disney Company’s recent trend towards modern, diverse, and inclusive creative choices have reprovingly been labeled “woke.” Wether you agree with the “go woke, go broke” chants, approve of the changes, or fall somewhere in between , there’s no question that recent projects have strayed from the traditional Disney villain trope that so many fans adore.
Disney villains of the last decade or so have been more of an existential nature than that of the classic cartoon antagonists that cemented their infamy in the Disney universe. Think of Frozen’s (2013) Prince Hans versus Sleeping Beauty’s (1959) Maleficent or Moana’s (2016) Te Kā against Aladdin’s (1992) Jafar. I love Princess Merida but who even was the villain in Brave (2012)? We haven’t had a REAL villain since Mother Gothel and Dr. Facilier…
But fret no more, Disney classic lover, it looks like the traditional Disney villain is making a comeback this November in Disney Animation Studio’s Wish! With the release of a new promo, the upcoming Disney Princess movie suggests we’re about to get a new antagonist for the Disney history books in King Magnifico.
Thrillingly voiced by A-list actor Chris Pine, King Magnifico gives real “muhaha” energy. Solidifying his insidious, evil intentions touched on in Wish’s first trailer, the newest promo shows the King of Rosas supposedly using his glorious powers for the good of his people. He bellows, “Who is ready to have their wish granted?!” But his showmanship betrays the King’s disingenuous motives.
We don’t quite know what he’s up to yet, but Princess Asha, voiced by actress Ariana DeBose, can sense that something’s up. Fans feel this could be the return to the Disney content they know and love. Can Wish and Pine’s King Magnifico prove that Disney still has the fundamental magic Walt started it all with?
See the short new promo below. Here’s hoping he makes all our Disney villain dreams come true – and has one heck of a solo number. Fingers crossed for November 22!
