As time keeps marching on, we lose more and more faces of familiarity in Hollywood. Today is no exception as we say goodbye to Oscar Winner and Disney Star Alan Arkin, who passed away at age 89. According to Variety, Arkin died at his home in Carlsbad, California, on June 29 after giving the world decades of riveting performances, including his Oscar-winning role in Little Miss Sunshine. Alan Arkin’s sons, Matthew, Adam, and Anthony, confirmed the actor’s death in a reminiscing statement provided to People.
“Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”
Arkin was well-known within the Disney community. His proclivity for acting and his dancing and singing ability afforded him a few roles within the company’s vast productions. He most notably starred as Peevy in the 1991 Disney film The Rocketeer. Arkin also made a couple of appearances alongside the Muppets (The Muppet Show episode 420 and The Muppets 1979). To top off his Disney-related resume, Alan Arkin also had a role as J. Griffin Remington in the 2019 live adaptation of Dumbo.
Outside of Disney, Arkin enjoyed a long and robust career with appearances in The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, Wait Until Dark, Catch-22, The In-Laws, Glengarry Glen Ross, Little Miss Sunshine, for which he was honored with an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. According to Disney Wiki, Arkin was also nominated in the same category for his work in the 2012 film Argo with Ben Affleck. Alan Arkin also is credited alongside Michael Douglas in the Netflix series The Kominsky Method. This performance earned him two more Primetime Emmy Award nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. Many fans may also remember the actor as the father of Winona Ryder’s character in Edward Scissorhands alongside Johnny Depp. If that’s not impressive enough, Alan Arkin also was an accomplished director and Tony winner. We are absolutely grateful to the wonderful performances that he put on screen for viewers to enjoy during the span of his career.
