Like Bruce Banner’s best work slacks, the Incredible Hulk seems to have grown out of Hollywood’s studio system of operation. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA talent strike is in full swing, putting a near full stop to the entertainment industry. While billionaires leading big studios are not interested in negotiation, Marvel actor Mark Ruffalo suggests indie films are the answer. So basically, “Hulk smash studio system.”
Here’s the gist of what the Marvel Studios star is thinking.
On his verified Twitter account, Mark Ruffalo suggests indie films are the way to go instead of trying to negotiate with the big studio monopoly. He says, “How about we all jump into indies now?” The actor imagines parallel film and television content creation that excludes the need for greedy studios and streaming networks. His idea centers around creating “actual competition” in the entertainment industry.
Then, his thread continues, the content creators can either sell it to an interested studio or “we take it out ourselves & WE share in those sales.” Ruffalo accuses the “empire of billionaires” of making talent feel like less than they’re actually worth. “While they hang out in the billionaire boy summer camps laughing like fat cats, we organize a new world for workers.”
The actor wants to strengthen the strike and its union members by quickly flocking to and supporting independent projects. Then the studios lose their leverage of having no competition. Ruffalo finishes by saying, “Share profits. If the project does well, everyone does well. This will also help our fellow filmmakers, “The Crew,” who we love, to keep working. This is also part of #Solidarity. We have to take care of each other.”
As long as Disney controls his copyright, its unlikely Marvel Studios’ Incredible Hulk will ever actually be an indie star. But the actor behind him certainly is willing to shake things up.
