Every year, film studios submit nominations to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for those films and crew that they believe should win an Oscar for their work. They then wait on pins and needles until the nominees are announced in February. Oscar nominations honor the best of the best in all aspects of filmmaking — from writing to cinematography, sound, and makeup. On the morning of February 8, the nominees were announced and, as has become tradition, Disney scored a number of nods.

Let’s take a look at all of the amazing Disney films that were nominated.

Cruella

Dark, gritty, and a great origin story, Cruella tells the story of how a young, dog-loving girl named Estella became one of Disney’s most captivating villains. Fans loved Disney’s newest origin story, which was much edgier than past films, and Cruella was a hit. Cruella received Oscar nominations in two categories. Jenny Beaven — who was the costume designer for the film — received a nomination for Best Costume Design.

With incredible costumes comes over-the-top hair and makeup. Nadia Stacey, Naomi Donne, and Julia Vernon were nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for their work on the film.

Encanto

Encanto has only been out for about 5 months, but the film has already taken the world by storm. People can’t get enough of the incredible visuals, the amazing story, and lovable characters (even Bruno). The song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” has rocketed to the top of music charts and people can’t get the soundtrack out of their heads.

Encanto received three nominations, including one for Best Original Score — written by Germaine Franco. Encanto’s song, “Dos Oruguitas” — written by Lin-Manuel Miranda — received a nomination for Best Original Song. Finally, Encanto received a nomination in the category of Best Animated Feature, where it is up against two other Disney films.

Best Animated Feature

Disney released a number of incredible animated features in the past year, and the Academy honored them for that. Not only was Encanto nominated for Best Animated Feature, but Raya and the Last Dragon and Luca were also nominated in the same category. Raya and the Last Dragon was released as a Disney film and Luca came out under the Disney/Pixar banner.

Marvel

The Marvel Cinematic Universe brings in hundreds of millions of dollars to Disney every year. Fans get enough of their favorites like Spider-Man and Thor, and they love being introduced to new superheroes like Shang-Chi. This year, two Marvel films received Oscar nominations in the same category. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: No Way Home were both nominated for Best Visual Effects.

20th Century Fox

Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, so all of the nominations for 20th Century films will now be a feather in Disney’s cap. And this year, that is quite an exciting prospect. 20th Century’s musical remake West Side Story received a total of seven nominations. Not only was the film nominated for Best Picture, but Steven Spielberg was also nominated for Best Director. Ariana DeBose — who stole the show as Anita — was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

The film also received nominations for Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.

This year’s Oscars certainly have the potential to be a big night for Disney. The 94th Academy Awards will take place at 8 p.m. on March 27, 2022, and will be held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
