Over the 100 years that The Walt Disney Company has been creating magic, there have been a number of celebrities who have been a part of that magic. Some of them have worked with Disney for years and appear in a number of projects. People like Angela Lansbury — who appeared in films like Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Beauty and the Beast — and Tom Hanks — known for his work on Disney movies like Saving Mr. Banks, Toy Story, and Pinocchio — have almost become synonymous with Disney.
Then there are people like Dick Van Dyke, who aren’t in as many Disney movies as others, but their roles were so iconic, they forever cement themselves in the hearts of Disney fans. Van Dyke is most well-known for his roles as Bert and Mr. Dawes Sr. in Mary Poppins, alongside Disney Legend Julie Andrews. He then played the role of Mr. Dawes Jr. in Mary Poppins Returns — which also starred Angela Lansbury. He also starred as Cecil in 20th Century Fox’s — now owned by Disney — Night at the Museum franchise.
Other notable roles – although not Disney – are Rob Petrie in The Dick Van Dyke Show, Caractactus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Dr. Mark Sloan in Diagnosis Murder. Van Dyke’s son, Barry Van Dyke, starred alongside his father in Diagnosis Murder.
In 1998, Dick Van Dyke was inducted into the Disney Legends Hall of Fame. And today, December 13, we celebrate this Disney Legend’s 97th birthday. That’s right, Dick Van Dyke is 97 years old and still bringing smiles to millions of people.

A fabulous outtake from MARY POPPINS (1964) as Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews have fun lip synching each others vocals.

In recent years, Van Dyke has been staying out of the spotlight and slowing down after years of hard work. However, he still delights fans when they see him out and about around his Southern California neighborhood. Van Dyke still goes to exercise classes with his wife, Arlene.
Van Dyke will also head down to Malibu Labor Exchange — a group that helps people find work — and hand money out to those who are less fortunate.
If you, like us, want to celebrate the magnificent Dick Van Dyke, then head on over to Disney+, where you can watch both Mary Poppins and Mary Poppins Returns. Night at the Museum is also available to stream on Disney+ Fun fact, when Van Dyke performed his tap dance in Mary Poppins Returns, he was 93 years old!
Happy birthday, Mr. Van Dyke!
