‘Encanto’ and ‘Hamilton’ Creator Joining Disney’s New ‘Percy Jackson’ Show!

Lin Manuel Percy Jackson

When Disney launched its streaming service, Disney+, in November 2019, the company promised that, not only would subscribers have access to hundreds of movies and television shows in Disney’s extensive library, but Disney would be creating a ton of new shows just for the streamer. In those 3 years, Disney has launched many successful series, including The Mandalorian, WandaVision, The Imagineering Story, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Andor, and more.

While most of Disney’s most successful shows have revolved around its Marvel and Star Wars franchises, Disney is working to bring more shows to the platform that do not focus on traditional superheroes and lightsabers. Disney+ will release new shows like Willow, The Santa Clauses, and National Treasure: Edge of History in the coming weeks and months.

Disney is also working on a new series based on the incredibly successful Percy Jackson book series. Percy Jackson and the Olympians will star Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase, Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood, Megan Mullally as Alecto, and Virginia Kull as Sally Jackson. And now, we have learned that Hermes — the god of thieves — will be played by none other than Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda.

A message from the messenger god himself: @Lin_Manuel Miranda is Hermes in #PercyJackson and the Olympians, an Original series coming to #DisneyPlus!

Miranda has been a big part of the Disney family, creating one of the most successful animated films in recent years, Encanto. Miranda was also responsible for the hit song from Encanto, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. Lin Manuel Miranda was also the mind behind the music in another popular Disney film, Moana.

While we don’t have a release date for Disney’s new Percy Jackson series, Disney has released a teaser trailer, which you can watch below. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is expected to come to Disney+ sometime in 2024 — according to the Disney+ website. The original film, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief — which came out in 2010 — is currently available to stream on Disney+.

In addition to his work on Percy Jackson, Miranda is also working with Disney Legend Alan Menken on the music for Disney’s newest live-action film, The Little Mermaid. There are also rumors circulating that Miranda will take on the role of Chef Louis in the film, but those reports are unconfirmed. The Little Mermaid is scheduled to come out on May 26, 2023.
