In 2004, viewers were brought into an action-packed historical adventure when Disney released the popular film National Treasure. The movie starred Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian who steals the Declaration of Independence to find a treasure that lies in a map secretly drawn into the document. While that sounds bad, he decides to steal it as a way to also protect the document from the movie’s antagonist — Ian — who wants the treasure and doesn’t care what happens to the Declaration. The film was so popular that three years later, Disney released a sequel film — National Treasure: Book of Secrets.
It’s been 14 years since the last National Treasure film was released, but that does not mean the story is over. Jerry Bruckheimer — the producer on both National Treasure and Book of Secrets — revealed in 2020 that a series based on the films was in development at Disney.
Well, it’s been about two years since we learned about the series, and we know that it will be called National Treasure: Edge of History. And now, after all this time, Disney has finally released the show’s official trailer. It was also shared that the series will premiere on Disney+ on December 14! Watch it below.
As you can see, the National Treasure series will introduce us to a whole new group of young treasure hunters, led by Jess Valenzuela — played by Lisette Olivera. The show also features some characters we loved from the first two films. The trailer leads off with a much older FBI agent Peter Sadusky — played by Harvey Keitel — telling Jess everything she knows about her family is a lie. He then shows her something that changes everything and sets Jess off on a dangerous, and exciting path. The trailer ends with Riley Poole — played by Justin Bartha — telling Jess he would love to help her.
Here is more of what we can expect from National Treasure: Edge of History:
The Disney+ Original series, “National Treasure: Edge of History” is an expansion of the “National Treasure” movie franchise told from the point of view of a young heroine, Jess (Lisette Olivera), a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer in search of answers about her family — who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about the past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.
National Treasure: Edge of History will also star Catherine Zeta-Jones as Billie (another treasure hunter), Jake Austin Walker as Liam, Jordan Rodrigues as Ethan, Zuri Reed as Tasha, Antonio Cipriano as Oren, and Lyndon Smith as Agent Ross.
In other exciting National Treasure news, Bruckheimer also revealed that a script for a third movie in the franchise was in development and that he wanted it sent to Nicolas Cage. That means that Cage may be gearing up to return to the screen as Ben Gates. Producers and writers for Edge of History also shared that they would love to have Ben Gates make a special appearance in the show at some point.
Again, National Treasure: Edge of History will premiere on Disney+ on December 14.
