When Disney launched its very own streaming service — Disney+ — in November 2019, there were a number of original shows that Disney created just for Disney+. One of those shows became one of the most popular shows of any streaming service — the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. The Mandalorian has had three hit seasons and is currently in production on a fourth.
And now, in a move rarely seen by Lucasfilm, we can confirm that a Mandalorian movie will be coming to the big screen! The exciting news was shared by Lucasfilm on January 9. And we even have a title — The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Here’s more info from Lucasfilm:
Directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni, The Mandalorian & Grogu will go into production in 2024.
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” added Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.

They also pointed out that it made sense for Lucasfilm to make The Mandalorian the first Star Wars Disney+ series to be made into a film.
It makes so much sense for @Disney and @Lucasfilm to start with a #Mandalorian movie. It has a built in audience that almost universally loves it, the talent involved is all locked in, behind the scenes stuff made and you can jump right into production. Good move.

The Mandalorian is just one of many successful shows from the Star Wars franchise created for Disney+. Fans of the universe can also binge-watch The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, The Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka, and Young Jedi Adventures.
Then, of course, there is also the complete film series available to watch on Disney+. There is everything from A New Hope (1977) to The Rise of Skywalker (2019). There are also several animated series, including Star Wars Resistance, Vintage Star Wars: Droids, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, and Ewoks: The Battle For Endor.
In addition to confirming The Mandalorian movie, Filoni also confirmed that the newest Star Wars series, Ahsoka, would be getting a second season. He said that season 2 was currently in development.
