It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a… dragon?!
The Disney Parks are no strangers to Magic and wonder. Over their decades of existence, fans have been treated to numerous sights that can only be seen to be believed. One of the reasons that fans flock to Disney from all over the world is to experience the Park’s magical and fantastical Park elements. Whether it be incredible rides, memorable meet and greets, or just the wonder of seeing the Castle, there is no lack of pixie dust at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.
However, it is not just the Parks that get the magic; it is also in the skies above.Â
High Flying Entertainment Above the Disney Theme Parks
While you might never see an airplane above a Disney theme park, that doesn’t mean there is no airborne activity. When the sky goes dark, certain Disney characters have been known to light up the night on a regular basis.
On any given night, Guests visiting Magic Kingdom Park are likely to see Tinkerbell sparingly magic pixie dust on crowds of thousands of wide-eyed fans below. Her flight has become an iconic tradition for Disney Parks, and many fans consider it a highlight of their Disney Park vacation.
At Walt Disney World Resort, fans look to the sky at the end of the nighttime spectacular Happily Ever After to see Tinkerbell fly from the top of Cinderella Castle out over the crowds below. It is an epic moment that truly makes every Guest feel like a child again.

Over at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, a more unique visitor has been known to take flight as well. Baymax, the lovable character from the movie Big Hero 6, has become a frequent flier over Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park. The flight takes place during Disney’s nighttime spectacular, Wondrous Journeys, which celebrates 100 years of Disney magic.
A Shocking Occurrence at Fantasyland
However, there is another character who once flew over Disney. While it is not often remembered and has never been revived, a dragon was once seen taking to the skies above the Parks.
On December 5, 2012, a soaring spectacle was seen above Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort. To celebrate the opening of New Fantasyland, a massive expansion in Magic Kingdom Park, Disney flew this dragon over the area. The dragon was meant to be a symbol of protecting the land from evil.
The dragon’s epic flight shocked fans. It even shot fire outside of its mouth! Unfortunately, the dragon never became a staple of the Park. While it was a massive hit amongst fans, it has not since been utilized by Disney. In my opinion, Disney should bring the dragon back!
