Can you believe that the first installment of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) series debuted 20 years ago? Unlike Disney’s current line-up of live-action films, the film was an instant hit.
The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was the perfect blend of adult-oriented and family-friendly, respecting the source material while adding new elements and characters to the story audiences knew and loved.
Characters like Captain Jack Sparrow.
Make No Mistake, Captain Jack Sparrow Was the Star of the Show

While the story may revolve around the lovesick Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and the daring Elizabeth Swann (Kiera Knightley), Captain Jack Sparrow is undoubtedly the star of the show. Audiences couldn’t help but adore that charming scoundrel, vices and all.
Which is why a sixth Pirates movie would almost definitely flop without Johnny Depp at the helm of the ship (pun totally intended).
Even with Johnny Depp leading a sixth installment in the Pirates franchise, the movie would still be a major risk. After all, the actor was heavily involved in the fight film, and still, the movie wasn’t a major hit with audiences.
If Walt Disney Pictures is willing to take a leap and make another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, it can’t take any risks because there’s simply too much for the company to lose right now.
The Walt Disney Company Is In No Position to Be Taking Risks
That means that Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow is absolutely necessary to entice audiences back into theaters for a sixth Pirates movie. But there’s just one problem: Johnny Depp is one of Hollywood’s most well-known actors, making him one of the priciest as well.
According to some recent reports, Johnny Depp made over $250 million filming the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise:
- Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl — $10 million
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest — $60 million
- Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End — $50 million
- Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — $55 million
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales — $90 million
That being said, a lot has changed for Johnny Depp since the first film debuted, and his going rate may be higher than ever.
Expenses May Be Higher Than Ever For This Project…
It’s no secret that the defamation trials involving Amber Heard took Johnny Depp’s floundering reputation and sunk it. Disney and nearly all of Hollywood began excommunicating the actor, putting the final nail in the coffin.
Understandably, Depp has grown bitter. For Walt Disney Pictures to convince him to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, it would have to truly be worth his while.
Disney needs him, and he definitely knows that. In short, the ball is in his court.
Disney would have to spend tens of millions to get Johnny Depp back for another Pirates movie, even if the company is in no position to spend even more money.
Would you watch a Pirates of the Caribbean movie without Jack Sparrow? Let Disney Dining know in the comments!
No, Johnny Depp is to PotC as Harrison Ford is to Indiana Jones. But, if Johnny knows how much his fans have supported him as Captain Jack, maybe he will have mercy on Disney. Too bad Disney didn’t stand behind him all along because THAT might have influenced him in a more positive way.
Absolutely NO
I wouldn’t watch Pirates movie if Johnny wasn’t in it.
He IS Captain Jack and makes the movie what it is!
Johnny has brought that character to life in so many ways..
I would not watch POC without Johnny Depp, he perfected Captain Jack Sparrow and no one can replace him as such.
Are you crazy? Why would anyone watch a POTC movie that didn’t have Johnny Depp in the lead role? Any actor who would try to take his place would fall flat on their face; simply because he IS Capt. Jack Sparrow. I don’t think he’ll agree to do it. Every time he’s asked in public he sounds very sad; hurt; and bewildered that they did this to him before he had a chance to clear his name. After all how much money did he make them? Probably more than any other actor. So NO I would not watch without him. I would suggest Disney start their offer at $100 Million and go up from there.
