Netflix Has a ‘Wednesday’ Problem: 5 Years, 3 Seasons, and High School Is Already Ending
Netflix has turned Wednesday into one of its biggest original shows. There’s just one major problem.
It takes a very long time to make.
Wednesday premiered in November 2022, introducing Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams to Nevermore Academy. Season 2 didn’t arrive until 2025, and Season 3 is currently scheduled to debut sometime in 2027.
Do the math, and the situation becomes pretty wild.
Netflix could take approximately five years to deliver only three seasons of Wednesday. Meanwhile, the characters aren’t standing still.
Ortega has confirmed Wednesday and her classmates will be high school seniors in Season 3.
Five Years Have Changed Everything
Growing up was always going to become part of Wednesday. The problem is how quickly the characters are reaching that point compared to the number of seasons viewers have actually received.
Season 1 established Nevermore Academy and Wednesday’s new life there.
Season 2 continued the story three years later.
Now Season 3 is already preparing Wednesday and her friends for adulthood.
Jenna Ortega has explained that the characters will deal with questions involving family, their futures and what becoming an adult actually means.
That’s a natural progression for the story. It’s also a reminder of how much real-world time has passed.
Netflix Can’t Stop the Clock
Ortega was 20 while filming the first season of Wednesday. She’s now 23 and will soon turn 24.
Hollywood regularly casts actors in their 20s as teenagers, so Ortega’s age isn’t inherently a problem.

If Season 3 doesn’t arrive until late 2027, what happens if Netflix orders Season 4 and another two-year wait follows?
Suddenly, the calendar could say 2029.
That would mean nearly seven years had passed since Wednesday originally premiered.
Netflix faced a similar challenge with Stranger Things, where increasingly lengthy waits meant the young cast aged considerably between seasons.
With Wednesday, Netflix appears to be addressing the issue directly by allowing its characters to grow up.
Is Nevermore Already Nearing Its End?
Season 3 doesn’t mean Wednesday itself is ending.
The series could continue well beyond high school. Wednesday could graduate, enter adulthood and find herself surrounded by entirely new mysteries.
Still, Nevermore has been one of the show’s defining elements.
After only two released seasons, Netflix is already moving Wednesday toward the end of her high school experience.
That’s remarkable for a television series this popular.
Older television models could deliver a new season every year. Netflix could potentially take five years to produce three seasons of Wednesday.
The show may have plenty of stories left to tell, but time is moving considerably faster than Netflix’s production schedule.
By Season 3, Wednesday Addams will already be thinking about adulthood and what comes next.
Netflix may eventually give fans Season 4 and beyond. At this pace, however, Wednesday could be well beyond Nevermore before viewers ever get the chance to feel like they spent much time there at all.
