Netflix Confirms Story Reversal for Jenna Ortega’s ‘Wednesday’ Season 3
Netflix’s Wednesday didn’t just become a hit when it premiered in November 2022 — it rewrote the platform’s record book.
Directed by Tim Burton and anchored by Jenna Ortega’s deadpan turn as Wednesday Addams, the series posted the biggest debut week for an English-language show in Netflix history, edging out the previous record set by Stranger Things Season 4. A viral dance sequence performed by Ortega helped cement the show as a fixture of the cultural conversation well past its release date.
That level of visibility hasn’t come without friction. Ahead of Season 2, Ortega spoke with Vanity Fair about the exit of Percy Hynes White, who portrayed Xavier Thorpe in Season 1 before being written out of the series following sexual assault allegations he has denied. “[It’s] a weird redirect, but we’re introducing so many different characters that I think it kind of will get lost,” Ortega told the outlet, noting that the show’s “world does feel slightly askew anyway.”
The actress also addressed a 2023 appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, where she’d admitted to becoming difficult on set while objecting to material she didn’t think suited her character — including a love-triangle storyline. “Everything that she does, everything that I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all,” Ortega told hosts Dax Shepard and Monica Padman at the time.
The remarks sparked pushback from television writers, and Ortega later acknowledged she might have framed the situation differently: “I probably could have used my words better in describing all of that… I think it was hard because I felt like I had represented the situation better; it probably would’ve been received better.”
Season 2 filming began in Ireland in May 2024, following the industry-wide delays caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Ortega has described the sophomore season as more horror-driven and structured closer to a set of self-contained mini-movies than a conventional television format. The cast brought back Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Emma Myers, Gwendoline Christie, and Christina Ricci, joined by newcomers Steve Buscemi, Thandiwe Newton, and Christopher Lloyd. The season released in 2025.
Where Season 3 Picks Up
Netflix will seemingly position Wednesday Season 3 in its 2027 slate, and early details suggest a major departure from the show’s usual setting. The Season 2 finale left Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) at risk of permanently transforming into an alpha werewolf, sending Wednesday, Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), and Thing away from Nevermoor Academy in search of her. That’s a significant shift for a series that has largely kept its cast tethered to the school grounds — and it signals that Season 3 will follow Wednesday considerably further afield.
Set photos surfacing earlier this year appear to answer the biggest lingering question: Enid is back in human form, spotted with her trademark blue-and-pink hair intact. That detail reframes the season’s central conflict — rather than reversing Enid’s transformation, the story looks poised to focus on her learning to manage her abilities as the group makes its way back to Nevermoor.
Netflix teased the international scope of the season in an April press release accompanying a set photo of Ortega posed against the Eiffel Tower: “Production for Season 3 has been underway near Dublin, but a newly surfaced behind-the-scenes image hints Wednesday might be taking a shift from Nevermore’s shadowy halls to something a little more chicly sinister.”
A Franchise Built to Last
Co-creator and showrunner Alfred Gough framed the show’s continued success as a collaborative effort in comments shared by Netflix: “Television has — and always will be — a team sport. [Co-creator and co-showrunner] Miles [Millar] and I have been doing this long enough to know that shows like this don’t come along every day. It’s such an alchemy of writing, directing, acting, crew, streamer, studio, and fans. We remain grateful and excited to continue this journey and tell these stories with all of our partners.”
The returning ensemble includes Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán as Morticia and Gomez Addams, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay, Georgie Farmer as Ajax Petropolus, Naomi J. Ogawa as Yoko Tanaka, Gwendoline Christie as Principal Larissa Weems, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams, Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin, Jamie McShane as Donovan Galpin, Joanna Lumley as Grandmama Hester Frump, Billie Piper as Isadora Capri, and Christina Ricci as Marilyn Thornhill/Laurel Gates.
New to the cast is Eva Green as Wednesday’s Aunt Ophelia Frump, a character glimpsed in Wednesday’s Season 2 vision writing “Wednesday Must Die” from captivity. Burton also confirmed additional legacy collaborators joining the season: “I’m so excited to be back for Season 3, and it’s great to be reunited with all of the original cast. The addition of some dear friends and past collaborators of mine — [Winona Ryder, Eva Green, Chris Sarandon, Noah Taylor]… makes this season extra special. I feel very lucky.”
