One thing that the Walt Disney Company actively stressed about its vacation offerings is that they bounced back from the COVID-19 pandemic almost as good as new. With Walt Disney World alone as one of the biggest tourist destinations in the world, Disney Parks wanted Guests to feel safe to return as soon as possible to get everything back on track. Disney may not have really bounced back from the pandemic era as well as it makes it seem. Disney Cruise Line certainly did not.
Even recently, Disney World has seen some of its lowest attendance, with social media posts showing the thinning crowds. But Forbes reports that Disney Cruise Line is where a massive COVID latent financial loss took place. Last year DCL recorded a $325.8 million net loss, which is “the second-worst result in its 26-year history.”
While some Guests bravely returned to cruise ships despite scars from the pandemic, it was no where near DCL’s peak numbers just before COVID hit. Forbes notes Disney Cruise Line’s pre-pandemic annual revenue of $1.6 billion in 2019 to highlight the contrast of its current losses, with a total of $1.2 billion since the onset of the pandemic.
The five ships, Disney Magic, Disney Dream, Disney Wonder, Disney Fantasy, and the newest Disney Wish, are not living up to the days before the COVID infection. Now, Disney Cruise Line is adding a brand-new ship to its fleet, which may only hinder its profits more unless demand sees a serious increase. The Disney Treasure is currently under construction and keeps fans in the loop every step of the way as a form of marketing.
The Disney Treasure is “inspired by the mystery and grandeur of a gilded palace,” with This magical “enchanting influences of Asia and Africa.” Statues of Aladdin and Jasmine will be featured in its atrium, and Captain Hook and Peter Pan are painted along the back of the boat.
Will the spirit of adventure of the Disney Treasure be enough to reel back in some of those missing millions? Or will the cost of running, staffing, and maintaining a less-than-full vessel add to the hemorrhaging?
