The First Controversies

First was pushback over the casting of Rachel Zegler. Being of Polish and Colombian descent, she is a woman of color. And since Snow White’s skin color is a big part of the plot, title, and even the character’s name, many people thought that the casting should have been different.

Next came leaked photos that the Walt Disney Company denied were real, only to have to come out and admit later that they were.

Then also came an announcement from Disney that the seven dwarfs would be removed and replaced in the name of inclusion. Instead of seven little people playing the iconic Disney seven dwarfs (Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Bashful, and Dopey), the new movie would feature “magical creatures” of various genders.

Next came criticisms of the original movie from Rachel Zegler. The actress cast as the Disney princess slammed the former ride at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, called the original film’s Prince Charming a stalker, and criticized Snow White, the character. She also criticized the groundbreaking animated feature as “dated.” Rachel Zegler also implied that the new live-action movie has nothing to do with love and will instead be about Snow White becoming a leader.

A New Rumor

But lately, a new rumor has surfaced that further digs at the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). According to a Twitter user who prides themselves on Hollywood leaks and secret information, the “dwarfs” in the new movie will be bandits. The rumor also states that the bandits steal from the Evil Queen to feed the poor, much like Robin Hood. Snow White becomes their leader and leads a revolution against the queen (played by Gal Gadot).

It seems to be a very different setup than the original seven dwarfs who mined diamonds for a living. If true, this take on the story changes it even further from the original one produced by Walt Disney himself.

Nothing is inherently wrong with changing an element here or there with a remake. But at a certain point, it fails to be a remake and becomes an entirely new project. When the title has changed, the plot has changed, the subplot is removed, and all the characters change, what’s left of the original? At this point, it makes you wonder…why the Disney Company didn’t just make a completely new film from the start.
