Lights, Camera, Action: Disney’s PhotoPass Gets a Glow-Up with New Cameras

Walt Disney World is taking a big step forward in enhancing its Disney PhotoPass service by upgrading the camera equipment used by its photographers. During a recent visit to EPCOT, guests noticed that PhotoPass photographers were using a new camera system, a shift that promises to significantly improve the quality of photos captured throughout the parks.

A Major Upgrade

Disney has reportedly transitioned from its long-standing partnership with Nikon to a new camera setup, signaling a major upgrade in its photo services. This change comes after years of using Nikon equipment, which had been the standard for Disney PhotoPass photographers since 2013. The partnership ended in 2021, and Disney has since removed Nikon branding from the parks. While the change in equipment has been gradual, a noticeable shift took place when photographers were spotted using the Sony A7IV camera system paired with a 24-105mm f/4 G-series lens.

The Sony A7IV system marks a significant improvement for Disney’s photo service, allowing for higher-quality images with better color accuracy, detail, and dynamic range. The Sony system represents a move from a crop sensor to a full-frame sensor, allowing for sharper, more vibrant photos. Additionally, the new camera setup includes enhanced image stabilization and an upgraded LCD screen for better flexibility in capturing images. These upgrades are expected to elevate the overall guest experience by providing clearer and more dynamic photos during their time at the parks.

The full-frame camera system, priced at around $4,100, will help Disney PhotoPass photographers capture high-quality memories for guests at Walt Disney World. While currently in the testing phase, sources indicate that Disney plans to roll out the new camera setup to the full fleet of PhotoPass photographers by late July or early August. Disney has not officially confirmed these changes, but the new equipment is expected to make a significant impact on the quality of photos taken in the parks.

Stay tuned for further announcements as the rollout continues.
