Could we finally have a timeframe for Pirates of the Caribbean 6? Read on to find out more mates!
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is a series of highly popular adventure films produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Begun in 2003, our expectations for what pirate films should be were changed forever once we got our first glimpse at Captain Jack Sparrow.
The movies follow the swashbuckling adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow, portrayed by the legendary actor Johnny Depp. The franchise has become a global phenomenon, captivating audiences with its unique blend of action, humor, and fantastical storytelling. Of course, much of this is thanks to the fabulous portrayal of Sparrow by the iconic Johnny Depp, but others, such as Bill Nighy as Davy Jones, also have lent their hand to the immortal seafaring series.
Five Pirates of the Caribbean movies have been released so far. The Curse of the Black Pearl debuted in 2003, followed by Dead Man’s Chest in 2006, and At World’s End in 2007 to round out the original trilogy. As demand for more Depp remained high, On Stranger Tides, a new story featuring Ian McShane as the infamous real-life pirate, Blackbeard, would premier in 2011, and finally, Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017. These films have grossed billions of dollars worldwide and have cemented Captain Jack Sparrow as one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history.
‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Captures Our Imaginations
Despite the prominent performance by Depp, the first film also included another memorable character. Directed by Gore Verbinski, Pirates of the Caribbean also introduced the world to Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom).
Interestingly enough, a cut scene provided at the end of the last film saw Will Turner, doomed Captain of the Flying Dutchman, set free from his curse and reunited with his love Elizabeth. Upon waking in the middle of the night, an interesting callback to the popular villain, Davy Jones, takes place.
Of course, this opens the door for further story-telling from screenwriters and Disney as they move forward with Pirates. Although Depp is the franchise’s centerpiece, the magical world of cursed Aztec gold, undead swashbucklers, and high-tide magic also helped capture our imaginations. Not to mention an amazing original soundtrack by composer Klaus Badelt.
Because of the wide berth of seafaring lore, which includes stories of mermaids, sunken treasure, curses, and much more, there is an endless supply of imaginative direction for future projects that could continue to titillate our senses, much like the original films.
The End of Jack Sparrow
As you probably know, Disney, who owns both the film franchise and the ride that inspired the amazing Jerry Bruckheimer productions, had a falling out with famed actor Johnny Depp over claims of abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard.
After the claims, Walt Disney Pictures famously fired Depp from his role as Jack Sparrow. Warner Brothers, where he portrayed Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts series, also chose to turn their back on Depp, ultimately recasting the wizarding role.
The Washington Post expose by Heard naming Johnny Depp in atrocious and disgusting abuse allegations eventually led to a countersuit filed by the once rum-loving Pirate, which ultimately was won by Depp.
However, the damage was done, as Disney and other studios chose to walk away from the iconic award-winning actor well before he had his literal day in court. During testimony in the defamation hearing, his working relationship with Disney was discussed, highlighted by Depp’s agreeance that he wouldn’t return to work for the studios, even for “$300 million and a million alpacas.”
Since then, fans have dug up any piece of information they can to shed light on the future of the Pirates franchise and how it pertains to a possible return for Johnny Depp. Although all clues indicate that Jack Sparrow may never set sail again, that doesn’t mean that the franchise is dead, as some unknown sources, according to Inside the Magic, suggest that Depp could be open to a return, warranting a proper script.
‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’
The idea of an upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 6 installment has generated much excitement and speculation among fans. While there is no official release date yet, the film is said to possibly be in development, signaling that more adventures may come in this beloved franchise.
Also, according to Coming Soon, the screenplay for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 was written by Craig Mazin, known for his work on the critically acclaimed TV series Chernobyl (2019), along with Ted Elliott, one of the original screenwriters of the franchise. Despite claims that the script is too weird, according to Inside the Magic, a sixth Pirates movie is in development.
Despite the initial excitement surrounding the news of a future Pirates project, no official word has been leaked on just how Disney plans to move forward, although the following quote was provided:
“Good news arrived for fans as the creators officially confirmed that Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is in development. Pirates of the Caribbean has garnered commendable ratings, boasting a solid 8.1/10 on IMDb and an impressive 86% average audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This date (revealed later in this article) is an estimation based on the information we have at the time of this writing, as the filming for the Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has not yet commenced.”
Date Announcement for New ‘Pirates’ Film Project
Also reported by Coming Soon, in black and white, was a suspected release date for the next Pirates of the Caribbean installment: “Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is expected to arrive in mid or late 2025.” They also went on to explain that, like many Disney projects, fans could expect the film to first arrive in theatres, with a drop later to Disney+.
Although it’s hard to say if 2025 is a reasonable time frame, Disney could undoubtedly use the box office boost. Currently unseated as the kings of cinema by Universal Pictures, a new Pirates project featuring Depp could help alleviate some of the investment pressures Disney is currently experiencing in the movie business.
However, as the films, usually handled by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, are a big-budget option for Walt Disney Pictures, a surplus at the box office could only be guaranteed if Depp were to return. Interestingly enough, Coming Soon offered no insight into that possibility.
While fans eagerly anticipate the return of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, as his portrayal has been instrumental in the success of the series, it has also been reported that Margot Robbie will also star in the upcoming film, leading a new cast of characters. This idea is expected to bring fresh ideas and breathe new life into the franchise while still capturing the spirit and charm that fans have come to love.
As mentioned by Inside the Magic, it should be noted that there is a lot of false information out there surrounding the return of Pirates of the Caribbean and Johnny Depp. One particular sequel, a fan-made poster, Pirates of the Caribbean: Demons of the Corsair, has gone viral and caused a lot of confusion for fans.
As the release of Pirates of the Caribbean 6 draws nearer, fans can expect more news and updates regarding the storyline, cast, and production. With the talented team behind the film, including producer Jerry Bruckheimer, there is no doubt that the sixth installment will deliver an exciting and memorable cinematic experience.
