Universal Orlando Confirms 6 Attractions Closing in 2024

Universal Orlando Resort, known for its immersive attractions and entertainment experiences, is set to undergo a series of changes and closures in 2024. Guests and fans of the resort can expect temporary shutdowns for maintenance, indefinite closures, and even permanent transformations.

Universal Orlando Resort is a premier theme park destination that has continued to trend upwards in terms of the industry. Continuing to grow, Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure are places for thrill-seekers, movie buffs, and fans of all ages.

At the heart of the resort lies The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a spellbinding land that immerses visitors in the enchanting universe of J.K. Rowling’s beloved series.

Here, you can explore iconic locations like Hogwarts Castle, sip Butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks, and embark on thrilling adventures such as Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. The allure of this magical realm extends to Diagon Alley, where you can shop for wands at Ollivanders and brave the dark depths of Gringotts Bank on Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is just one facet of Universal Orlando Resort’s charm, as the parks also boast popular attractions like Jurassic World VelociCoaster, The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, Revenge of the Mummy, E.T. Adventure, and MEN IN BLACK: Alien Attack.

As we look towards the rest of 2024, here’s a look at six attractions that have been confirmed for closures at Universal Orlando Resort this year.

Poseidon’s Fury Has Been Closed Permanently

One of the most significant updates at Universal Orlando Resort in 2024 is the permanent closure of Poseidon’s Fury. The popular attraction closed down permanently in 2023, and now we wait to see what might be coming to the area.

Poseidon’s Fury was a unique walkthrough attraction that combined live actors, special effects, and intricate storytelling to immerse guests in the world of Greek gods and sea monsters. It was a one-of-a-kind experience that garnered a dedicated fan following over the years.

While the closure of Poseidon’s Fury is a loss for fans, there are exciting rumors swirling around about what might replace it. Speculation suggests that a Legend of Zelda attraction could take its place. If this rumor turns out to be true, it would be a groundbreaking addition to Universal Orlando Resort.

The Legend of Zelda is a beloved video game franchise, and bringing it to life in a theme park setting would be a dream come true for fans.

This would coincide with the rumor that Universal is considering taking the world of Nintendo to another level.

With SUPER NINTENDO WORLD expected to open at Epic Universe in 2025, there are rumors that Universal wants to add a Nintendo-themed attraction at both Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. If The Legend of Zelda came to Islands of Adventure, the expectation is that Pokemon could one day come to Universal Studios Florida, likely in the place where The Simpsons currently reside.

However, it’s important to note that Universal Orlando Resort has not officially announced the replacement for Poseidon’s Fury. The park is known for its secrecy when it comes to new attractions, building anticipation and excitement among visitors.

Keep an eye out for further announcements as Universal Orlando Resort continues to evolve and provide innovative experiences for its guests.

The Nighttime Lights At Hogwarts Castle

In a disappointing turn of events, The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle, a mesmerizing and enchanting spectacle, has been closed indefinitely. The park management has not provided specific details about the closure’s reasons, leaving fans wondering about the fate of this beloved nighttime show. The Christmas show did return during the Holiday season, but the regular show still remains closed.

The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle was a magical experience that illuminated the iconic Hogwarts Castle in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter with dazzling lights and projections. Accompanied by a captivating soundtrack, it transported guests into the Wizarding World, bringing key moments from the Harry Potter series to life in a breathtaking display of artistry and technology.

While the indefinite closure might be disheartening for fans, it is not uncommon for theme parks to make changes to their attractions. It is speculated that this closure may be related to ongoing efforts to revamp the experience or introduce new nighttime entertainment at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Universal Orlando Resort is known for its commitment to providing immersive experiences, so there is hope that something equally enchanting will replace The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle in the future.

Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show

Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show, a fan-favorite live entertainment attraction, will be temporarily closed from January 16 to January 18, 2024. This brief closure period is primarily for routine maintenance and updates. Universal Orlando Resort takes pride in delivering top-notch experiences to its visitors, and this attraction is no exception. During this time, the park’s dedicated team will be working diligently to enhance the show’s special effects, costumes, and overall experience.

The Horror Make-Up Show is renowned for its behind-the-scenes look at the magic of Hollywood special effects makeup. Guests have the opportunity to witness how the gruesome and eerie creatures of horror films are brought to life. The show features talented hosts who provide a mix of humor and insight, making it an entertaining and educational experience for visitors of all ages.

It has not been confirmed why The Horror Make-Up Show is closing, but only a two-day closure leads us to believe that whatever updates or changes that happen during this span will only be minor. The show is just one of two attractions remaining from opening day for Universal Studios Orlando. The other, of course, is E.T. Adventure.

While there have been fears for years among the Universal fanbase that both of these attractions could be on the cutting block, there have not been any significant developments to point to this being true. Instead, Universal has continued to invest in them, and they look to remain mainstays for the foreseeable future.

Jurassic Park River Adventure

For fans of thrilling adventures through the world of dinosaurs, Jurassic Park River Adventure is a must-visit attraction. However, mark your calendars for a brief closure, which is happening now through February 1, 2024. This temporary shutdown is aimed at ensuring the ride’s safety and efficiency.

Jurassic Park River Adventure is known for its heart-pounding journey through a prehistoric world filled with life-sized dinosaurs and breathtaking scenery. The ride’s combination of animatronics, water effects, and storytelling has made it a standout attraction at Universal Orlando Resort.

During this maintenance period, the park’s dedicated team will be working diligently to enhance the ride’s safety features, update animatronics, and improve the overall guest experience. Visitors can anticipate a smoother and more thrilling journey through the world of dinosaurs when the ride reopens its doors.

Jurassic Park River Adventure closes down ever year for maintenance. Keep in mind that closures are subject to change and that, sometimes, these can be extended depending upon the projects being completed on the attraction. There have been rumors that this attraction could be transformed into Jurassic World River Adventure, similar to the one in Universal Studios Hollywood, but this isn’t expected to be the case this time around.

Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges

Prepare to get wet and wild with Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges! This popular water ride is a favorite among visitors looking for a splashy adventure, especially during the spring and summer months. However, from February 5 to March 8, 2024, the attraction will be closed for an extended period.

During this time, Universal Orlando Resort will undergo extensive maintenance and refurbishments to enhance the ride’s water effects, theming, and overall guest experience. Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges is known for its unpredictably drenching rapids, and the theme park is committed to ensuring that guests have the most thrilling and enjoyable experience possible.

Just like Jurassic Park River Adventure, Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges also typically closes down once per year– for just a little more than a month– as it undergoes maintenance. The ride, which is located in Toon Lagoon, should be open around mid-March, just in time for spring break crowds.

DreamWorks Land: Opening This Year

The last attraction that is currently closed at Universal Orlando Resort is located at Universal Studios Florida.

The new attraction, which is set to open this year, will take the place of the permanently-closed Woody Woodpecker KidZone. While not much has been announced as far as its offerings, we can glean that there will be a Shrek-themed area and that Woody Woodpecker’s Nuthouse Coaster will be rethemed to the “Trollercoaster.”

Universal has not issued an official statement on when the land might open or what specific attractions will be in the area, but we can expect to hear more in the coming months as they gear up for its grand opening.

“As guests step into this new land, their imaginations will run wild as they take in the vibrant colors, sights and sounds that surround them,” Universal previously shared. “They will share special moments with their favorite characters like Gabby from Gabby’s Dollhouse and explore themed, interactive play spaces and attractions that bring popular franchises like Shrek, Trolls and Kung Fu Panda to life in the most imaginatively fun ways.”

Currently, no other information has been given on the new Universal Orlando attraction.
