What’s the first thing that comes to mind when we say “Pinocchio”? Is it Disney’s animated Pinocchio film from 1940? Or how about Jiminy Cricket who always let his conscience be his guide? Well, the wooden boy and his cricket friend are making a return… in TWO ways actually!

It’s no surprise that Walt Disney Studios is on a live-action retelling kick. Live-action films such as Cinderella (2015), Beauty and the Beast (2017), Dumbo (2019), Mulan (2020), and many (MANY!) more have filled our screens these past few years. Back in 2020, Disney announced they would be releasing a live-action version of Pinocchio directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks. Other confirmed film stars include Cynthia Erivo, Luke Evans, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keegan-Michael Key, and Lorraine Bracco.

With the release of the title teaser as shown in the tweet below, we’re curious to see what will unfold in this live-action Pinocchio. But it seems like Disney isn’t the only one bringing Pinocchio back!

Yes, the 1883 Italian book The Adventures of Pinocchio, by Carlo Collodi seems to have peaked the interest of Netflix as well. Netflix has revealed Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is reimagining the classic Italian tale of Pinocchio in a stop-motion musical adventure that follows the mischievous adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.
This Netflix remake will be directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson and feature a voice cast with Ewan McGregor as Cricket, David Bradley as Geppetto, and introducing Gregory Mann as Pinocchio. Other cast includes Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton.

Interestingly enough, both Disney’s live-action Pinocchio and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio are scheduled to release in late 2022. Disney has yet to release a month, but we do know the film will come to Disney+ in “late 2022”. Netflix has announced its version of Pinocchio is being released in December 2022.
