For one, Halle Bailey became the first African American live-action Disney Princess, breaking barriers as this generation’s Ariel.
For another example, the live-action version of The Little Mermaid is the Walt Disney Company’s longest live-action film to date.
But once the Little Mermaid remake swam into theaters, the film broke another record, arguably one of the most important ones when it comes to determining a film’s success: audience reaction.
But This Live-Action Remake Broke Some of the Best Records Once It Was Released
At the time of the film’s theatrical release, fans flocked to Rotten Tomatoes, granting it an audience rating of 95%. This broke records as the Little Mermaid remake became the most well-received live-action Disney remake.
But even as the film leaves theaters and dives onto Disney Plus (stylistically Disney+), it continues to break records:

Using the Walt Disney Company’s own viewing metrics, The Little Mermaid has earned over 16 million views in its first week on Disney Plus. That means this film has become the most-viewed Disney Plus premiere since Hocus Pocus 2 (2022).
Audiences May Not Like Live-Action Remakes, But They Like The Little Mermaid
While audiences and fans keep begging the Walt Disney Company to cool it with the live-action remakes, The Little Mermaid has become the most well-received live-action remake to date, with the biggest Disney movie premiere on Disney Plus to boot!
That’s not to say that the film doesn’t have its own flaws (after all, it’s still a live-action remake). Even still, the movie continues to capture audiences’ attention and break records even on streaming services.
