Guests Furious Over EPCOT’s New Trash Cans—Here’s Why They’re Not Happy

Walt Disney World Resort has introduced a new style of trash cans at EPCOT, marking a shift in its approach to waste management. While these new solar-powered “Big Belly” trash compactors are designed to be more efficient, they have sparked mixed reactions from guests, particularly concerning their impact on dining spaces in the park.

The new models, which have been spotted in areas like the Germany Pavilion and American Adventure Pavilion, are part of a test rollout. Speculation is growing that these efficient compactors could eventually be expanded to other parts of the resort. These compactors are designed to compress trash, and with the added feature of solar power, they reduce the need for constant checks and bag changes by notifying custodial workers when they’re nearing capacity.

The Downside: Loss of Dining Tables

While the compactors are certainly a step forward in terms of waste management, their sleek, modern design comes with a significant downside: the sloped tops make them less suitable for the common practice of guests using trash cans as impromptu tables. This has long been a staple for many park visitors, especially in high-traffic areas where seating is limited. The new trash cans have left some guests frustrated, as their use as makeshift tables has now become more difficult.

One Reddit user expressed their thoughts on the new setup, saying:

“Can’t wait for the complaints to roll in. These are Big Belly trash compactors. They are solar powered and are far more efficient than regular trash cans because they compact the trash! They even send notifications when they are getting full, so custodial workers don’t have to be constantly checking or changing trash bags. Biggest con: removal of lots of EPCOT dining tables.

Guests Express Frustration Over Loss of Dining Space

While the new trash cans offer a more sustainable and efficient solution, many visitors are upset by the removal of what were once convenient dining spots created by well-placed trash cans.

For some, these makeshift tables were essential for finding a place to sit, particularly during busy times. The transition away from this practice, with fewer places to eat or rest, is frustrating for many park-goers who feel this change has compromised their overall experience.

The Big Belly trash compactors are part of Disney’s ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and sustainability across its parks. These solar-powered trash cans are designed to reduce waste and lessen the burden on custodial staff, but as this test shows, changes to guest comfort are an unavoidable part of this shift.

However, with seating being at a premium, especially in crowded areas, the loss of these “dining tables” may present a new challenge for guests. Balancing the need for efficient waste management with guest experience is a delicate task, and it remains to be seen how Disney will address the concerns surrounding these changes.
