There are a lot of amazing parts of a Disney vacation — from the beautifully themed hotels to the mouthwatering food and the incredible attractions. Disney has six resorts around the world — Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, Tokyo Disney, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Shanghai Disneyland. Each of these reports has its own unique feel, one-of-a-kind accommodations, and signature snacks.

Over at the Shanghai Disneyland Resort, guests have fallen in love with Duffy the Bear and his friends — LinaBell, StellaLou, Gelatoni, ShellieMay, Olu Mel, and CookieAnn. In fact, Shanghai Disney is the perfect place to go if you are on the hunt for some truly great Duffy and Friends merchandise!

On March 15, Shanghai Disney released two new fuzzy character backpacks. One backpack looked like Duffy Bear and the other was designed to look like CookieAnn.

Guests quickly formed a massive line outside Sweetheart Confectionery, hoping to get their hands on some of the bags. The line quickly got unreasonably long, with guests being given an estimated wait time of EIGHT HOURS. And the extensive line ended up being too much for some guests to handle.

According to Shanghai Daily, security had to be called to handle the crowd and some guests even waited while fainting.

After Sweetheart Confectionery, which sells Disney merchandise, put them on sale customers reported waiting in line for over eight hours, only to be told by the evening that they had sold out.

The scene at the store was chaotic at times, with reports of fainting incidents and security being called to maintain order.

Amid the chaos, videos surfaced online of people demanding a resolution from Disney officials and some attempting to rush into the store.

And, as with other pieces of in-demand merchandise, many Duffy and CookieAnn bags quickly made it to the internet, where they were being sold for way more than the original purchasers had bought them for.

That was also reportedly not the only way scalpers took advantage of Disney guests. Disney had released shopping reservations at 5 a.m. that day, so guests could reserve a slot in line. Scalpers got a hold of some of those reservations and were selling them for hundreds of yuan.

A breakdown of the event revealed miscommunication and organizational mishaps. Despite promises of stock availability and structured queueing systems, many were left uninformed about the actual stock levels until it was too late.

There is online reservation service to the Disney Home store on Disney’s official Wechat account, however, hundreds of reservations were all gone within minutes after they were released at a little past 5am.

Scalpers reportedly charged between 300 to 500 yuan per person for access.

Shanghai Disneyland officials spoke to Shanghai Daily and said that the company was going to work on a way to “optimize operations” for future merchandise releases.

Sadly, this is not the first time that guests have gone wild for new Disney merchandise, leading to truly chaotic moments.

Last year, a Winnie the Pooh fleece jacket was released at Disneyland Resort. The resellers came out in force, trying to snatch up as much merchandise as possible. Things got so bad that some customers were physically blocked from getting to the merchandise, so the resellers could grab more.

Then, there are the Disneyland Paris resellers who were seen walking out with WAGONS full of merchandise. Not every Disney Resort allows wagons inside, but Disneyland Paris still does, and some scalpers took advantage.

We do not know if Shanghai Disney plans on getting more shipments of the Duffy Bear and CookieAnn purses.

  1. Anyone waiting on line for any kind of merchandise, or ride for that matter, should instead get in line at a mental health facility.
