Have you heard of this new trading card game from Disney that’s such a hit that reprints of the cards are already in high demand? The game is called Disney Lorcana, and while it’s selling out around the world and comes with high praise, it definitely seems to be more adult-leaning in style.
The game is similar to other popular trading card games like Magic: The Gathering and the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game featuring various versions of your favorite Disney characters. Starting September 1st, Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter will be available to customers via the popular online shopping venue shopDisney.
The Disney Parks Blog explains that “players take on the role of Illumineers and wield magic ink to summon a team of Disney characters known as glimmers” to aid the realm of Lorcana. The goal is to search for and collect missing lore (20 in one game) as quickly as possible to protect the kingdom and win the game.
Ravensburger North America has made some really helpful videos that break down how to play and use your characters during your quest. Some important aspects include the characters’ special abilities, six types of ink, if a card is turned sideways or not, will power damage numbers, and more.
Honestly, it’s pretty complicated, even though Disney insists it’s beginner-friendly. If you have some experience in other collectible trading card games, then you may have an easier time jumping into the rules and details that create the Disney Lorcana world. The decks are listed as age 8 and up, but I find it seriously hard to believe the average 8-year-old could grasp the depth of this game. But collecting favorites from Disney stories does seem like a fun aspect.
I’m not saying it’s impossible – just get ready to do some homework before you can play this game to its fullest. Get your starter pack as soon as you can because fans are basically lining up at game stores to get theirs before they sell out.
Even though it’s brand new, Disney Lorcana is on track to become as popular as Magic: The Gathering, which has cards that fans have been known to pay a HEFTY price tag for.
