In this day and age, production companies have found a lot of success with bringing back characters and stories that people have loved for decades. Reboots with new looks and twists are the bread and butter of some companies, and everyone wants in on something that has proven successful in the past, including Disney. Disney has rebooted more than one movie or television show in recent history — this includes Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, and Turner & Hooch. It has also been reported that Darkwing Duck and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboots are in the works.
We also have now learned that Disney is creating a brand-new series based on the famous masked vigilante, Zorro. Disney has cast Wilmer Valderrama — best known as Fez in That 70s Show — to portray the masked avenger. Valderrama will also be an executive producer on the project.
According to a report from Variety:
“We’re reimagining this Disney classic as a compelling period piece, set in Pueblo de Los Angeles, but told in a very modern telenovela style — with richly drawn contemporary characters and relationships set against the action, drama, suspense and humor of the original, iconic Zorro,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “Wilmer shares our commitment to reflect the interesting and rich diversity of the human experience and we look forward to delivering a culturally relevant and entertaining story with definitional characters that will connect with our viewers for generations to come.”
The new Zorro series is currently being produced for Disney Branded Television, which consists of Disney+, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD. While Disney has not said where the new series will land, Disney+ may be the most logical choice as both adults and children enjoy Disney+ and Disney Junior, Disney Channel, and Disney XD are aimed primarily at children.
Valderrama shared with Variety how excited he was to portray the famous hero, saying:
“Growing up, Zorro was the one character that made me, as a Latino, feel like I could be a hero,” Valderrama said. “As an adult and a storyteller, I have a responsibility in the stories that I help bring to life. To partner with Gary and Disney to bring Zorro back into the family after 60 years and be a part of the legacy for other children to know they too can be the heroes of their own stories is a dream come true.”
This is not the first time that Disney has teamed up with the House of Mouse. Valderrama has appeared in a number of ABC/Disney shows including Grey’s Anatomy and Wizards of Waverly Place. He has also voiced a number of Disney characters including Manny in the show Handy Manny, Gaxton in Onward (2020), and most recently, Agustin in Encanto, which is currently in theaters.
