Whoops! Disney Accidentally Advises Fans Against Watching New ‘Lion King’ Film

In 1994, Disney released The Lion King, a film that became one of its most beloved and successful animated movies. The timeless tale of Simba’s journey to reclaim his place as king of the Pride Lands has inspired sequels, spin-offs, a Broadway musical, and even a 2019 live-action adaptation. The franchise has consistently delivered box office success—until now.

Disney’s latest installment, Mufasa: The Lion King, has faced significant backlash, and a recent marketing mishap has only added fuel to the fire. Fans took to social media to criticize the prequel’s promotional efforts, which some say inadvertently discouraged audiences from watching the film.

The Marketing Blunder

Released on December 20, Mufasa: The Lion King promised to explore the origin story of Simba’s father, Mufasa. While the concept initially intrigued fans, the film’s marketing campaign quickly went off track.

In an attempt to capitalize on the iconic phrase “Hakuna Matata” (meaning “no worries”), Disney’s email promotion mistakenly included the phrase “No Mufasa,” leading to confusion and mockery online.

X (formerly Twitter) user @GratThemeParks shared a screenshot of the email, captioned:

Okay, Disney! I won’t watch #Mufasa. 🙄

The post quickly gained traction, with fans joking that Disney was inadvertently telling them to skip the film. The tweet sparked a wave of memes and comments pointing out the marketing gaffe.

Many fans called the email an unfortunate case of “foreshadowing,” as the movie faced stiff competition from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which debuted the same day. Audiences seemed more excited about Sonic’s return, leaving Mufasa struggling at the box office.

Box Office Woes

Despite Disney’s efforts to promote Mufasa: The Lion King, the movie’s performance has been underwhelming. So far, it has grossed $122 million globally—a far cry from the studio’s projections. In comparison, The Lion King (2019) live-action remake brought in over $1.6 billion during its theatrical run. Critics have cited the film’s lack of originality as one of the reasons for its lukewarm reception.

The Negative Reception

While Mufasa: The Lion King has an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics have been far less kind, with the film holding a 56% approval rating. Many reviewers argue that the movie fails to add meaningful depth to the iconic character. “Instead of expanding Mufasa’s story, it feels like a watered-down version of The Lion King,” one review noted.

The lackluster reception has reignited debates about Disney’s reliance on sequels and remakes. While some fans appreciate revisiting beloved characters, others believe the studio’s focus on rehashing old stories has led to creative stagnation.

Competing with Sonic

The release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on the same day added further pressure. The film has been a hit with both critics and audiences, boasting an impressive 98% audience score and an 87% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans of the Sonic franchise praised its humor, action, and nostalgic appeal, leaving Mufasa in its shadow.

“Sonic stole the spotlight,” one commenter observed. “Disney underestimated just how much people love this blue hedgehog.”

Where Did It Go Wrong?

The challenges facing Mufasa: The Lion King highlight broader issues with Disney’s current strategy.

The prequel’s story, which explores Mufasa’s rise from an orphaned cub to the king of the Pride Lands, was criticized for lacking the emotional resonance and originality that made The Lion King a classic. The film also struggled to justify its existence, as many fans felt Mufasa’s backstory was already implied in the original movie.

Adding to the skepticism, the film’s release date placed it in direct competition with a highly anticipated blockbuster. The timing, combined with the negative buzz from Disney’s marketing mishap, created a perfect storm of challenges.

The Future of The Lion King Franchise

Despite the setbacks, Disney remains committed to its Lion King universe. While Mufasa: The Lion King may not have met expectations, the franchise continues to hold a special place in the hearts of fans. The Broadway production remains a cultural phenomenon, and the original film is still celebrated as one of Disney’s greatest achievements.

As Disney looks to the future, Mufasa’s mixed reception reminds us that even the most beloved franchises require fresh and compelling storytelling to thrive. Whether the studio will take these lessons to heart remains to be seen.
