In 1994, Disney introduced The Lion King, a film that would go on to become one of the studio’s most beloved and successful animated classics. Starring James Earl Jones, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane, and Ernie Sabella, the movie follows the journey of Simba, a young lion who flees his home after being manipulated by his sinister uncle Scar into believing he’s responsible for the death of his father, Mufasa. Eventually, Simba returns to Pride Rock, where he must confront Scar, reclaim his birthright, and restore peace to the Pride Lands.
The film’s monumental success sparked a franchise that went far beyond the original release. Disney expanded the saga with two sequels — The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride (1998) and The Lion King 1½ (2004) — as well as two popular TV series, The Lion King’s Timon & Pumbaa and The Lion Guard. In 2019, Disney also brought The Lion King to the big screen again, this time with a stunning live-action remake that became one of the studio’s highest-grossing films of all time.
Now, the Lion King franchise is ready to add another chapter. On December 20, Disney will release Mufasa: The Lion King, a live-action prequel that delves into the backstories of iconic characters Mufasa and Scar. The film will explore Mufasa’s rise to power, his relationship with his brother Taka (who would eventually become Scar), and how the bond between them ultimately unraveled. Additionally, the story will continue the legacy of Simba and Nala’s daughter, Kiara, offering fans even more of the world they’ve come to cherish.

While Disney Legend Elton John was instrumental in crafting the award-winning music for every previous Lion King project, Disney has chosen a fresh approach for Mufasa: The Lion King. For this new chapter, the studio enlisted the talents of Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creative genius behind Moana (2016), Encanto (2021), and Hamilton.
With the film’s release just weeks away, Miranda has been making the rounds in the press, sharing insights into his experience working with Disney on one of its most beloved and iconic franchises.

During a promotional interview, Miranda expressed his love for The Lion King 1½, a 2004 direct-to-video release that explored the origins of Timon and Pumbaa’s friendship. The film cleverly revisits key moments from the original movie through the comedic lens of the lovable duo, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their role in Simba’s journey.
Miranda sees untapped potential in revisiting this quirky spin-off, saying:
“I’m holding out for a live-action remake of The Lion King 1½. Because you know what, that’s the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the extended Lion King universe, and it’s low-key great!”

While The Lion King 1½ may not have the prestige of its predecessors, it has carved out a niche among fans who appreciate its humor and fresh perspective. The movie explores Timon’s backstory, delving into his family dynamics and his quest to find “Hakuna Matata,” the carefree philosophy that defines him and Pumbaa. The pair’s comedic antics and emotional growth add depth to their roles in Simba’s life.
A live-action remake could capitalize on the success of Disney’s recent reimaginings, such as The Little Mermaid (2023) and The Lion King (2019). By incorporating cutting-edge technology, Miranda’s signature musical style, and a strong narrative focus, the project could breathe new life into the franchise.
For now, Disney has not announced any plans to revisit The Lion King 1½. However, given the franchise’s enduring popularity and the critical and financial success of its previous adaptations, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Miranda’s passion for the project, combined with his proven track record of creating Disney hits, makes him the ideal candidate to helm such an undertaking.
As fans eagerly await the release of Mufasa: The Lion King, Miranda’s dream project offers a glimpse into what the future of The Lion King could hold. Could Timon and Pumbaa take center stage once again? With Disney’s commitment to innovation and storytelling, anything is possible.
