Brand-new Star Wars content is one thing fans already knew Disney and Lucasfilm were working towards, but this newly confirmed series is something even original fans of the franchise are actually excited for! Variety confirmed today that not only will Disney Plus be moving forward with a series focussing on Lando Calrissian’s beloved character from the first three films, but superstar Donald Glover has signed on as a writer!
*Please Note: This writing contract was signed before the WGA strike began.*
Donald Glover (Community, The Lion King, Atlanta) and his brother Stephen Glover have been officially announced as the writers for Lucasfilm and Disney Plus’ newest Star Wars series. They are moving forward without Justin Simien, who was thought to be attached to the project since rumors of the show began in late 2020.
Donald Glover will not only be helping to write the show but also stepping back into his role as the young Lando Calrissian, which he played in Ron Howard’s 2018 Star Wars story Solo. Donald Glover offered a glimpse into Lando’s backstory and his early encounters with Han Solo. His performance was well-received by both fans and critics alike.
The charming smuggler/ gambler character first appears in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and becomes a key ally to Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. Lando appears again in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983) and has another notable return in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Each of these times, he is played by Billy Dee Williams.
Glover already went on record with GQ saying he’d be interested in playing Lando again in the Star Wars universe. It turns out he may have been hinting at what he already knew was in the works!
Donald Glover said,
“I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time, being him. It just has to be the right way to do it. Time is precious…I’m not interested in doing anything that’s going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy. It just has to be the right thing, and I think it could be. Lando is definitely somebody I like to hang out with.”
While Star Wars fans will have to wait until after the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are settled to get more news on the Lando series development, audiences are cautiously hopeful about Donald Glover’s involvement.
