You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t seen the original Lion King (1994) film of the Disney Renaissance or heard any of the fantastic music (written by Hans Zimmer and Elton John).
From a Broadway musical to multiple films and TV shows to live performances in Walt Disney World, The Lion King series has had a tremendous cultural impact, and it’s not quite through with us just yet!
Not long after the ‘live action’ Lion King (2019) film debuted (starring Donald Glover and Beyonce), the Walt Disney Company announced another installment in the Lion King universe: a prequel focusing on Mufasa.
So far, we know very little about Mufasa: The Lion King besides the premise.
Similar to The Lion King ½ (2004), the story will be told to the audience by Rafiki, who is recounting the tale to Timon (Billy Eichner) and Pumba (Seth Rogan), the happy-go-lucky characters who taught us about ‘Hakuna Matata.’
This film takes place immediately after the events of the ‘live-action’ Lion King, so fans can expect the same stunning visuals and hyper-realistic animation.
However, fans want more than awe inspiring visual artistry from a new Lion King film. Fans have had questions about the backstories of these beloved characters ever since the original Lion King film debuted, and Mufasa: The Lion King has the power to answer those questions.
Firstly, what were Scar & Mufasa’s parents like? Something must have happened for Scar to have such bitter resentment toward his own brother. Was it the work of their parents favoring the stronger cub? Or was there something more?
Fans also wonder how he got the name ‘Scar.’ Many fans have poked fun at the name ‘Scar,’ stating it’s as obvious as naming a character ‘Evil Queen.’ What’s the story behind the titular scar itself, and what was Scar’s name before the incident?
What was their relationship like? In the events of both the 1994 and 2019 versions of The Lion King, Mufasa is exasperated and frustrated at Scar but clearly still loves him. Scar, however, clearly hates his brother. What could have happened to these brothers for their relationship to deteriorate?
Unfortunately, we will just have to wait and see if these questions are answered by the upcoming film.
What are you hoping for out of a Mufasa prequel?
