Will Disney Embrace Muslim Values at New UAE Theme Park?

Disney has revealed plans for a new theme park and resort in Abu Dhabi, collaborating with Miral, a prominent developer in the region. Located on Yas Island, the waterfront resort is designed to attract visitors from the Middle East, Africa, India, Asia, Europe, and beyond, with Disney’s signature attractions and experiences set to make their debut in this growing global tourism hub. However, alongside the excitement surrounding the project, concerns have emerged about the safety of minority groups visiting the region, especially LGBTQ+ individuals and Jewish tourists.

Safety Concerns for LGBTQ+ and Jewish Tourists

A significant point of discussion has been the concerns raised by LGBTQ+ and Jewish tourists, as the UAE has strict cultural norms and laws that could pose risks for some guests. Sigmanursing.org, a global advocacy organization, issued a statement urging caution for LGBTQ individuals traveling to the UAE. According to the organization:

“LGBTQ individuals may consider taking additional precautions:

  • If traveling with a same-sex partner or companion, consider booking a hotel room with double beds.
  • Outside of conference venues and private rooms, avoid public displays of affection.
  • Transgender individuals may have additional concerns and considerations, and uncomfortable situations may occur during security screenings, passport control, etc.”

The restrictions on public displays of affection and the need for caution regarding gender identity are serious considerations for travelers. As the UAE has been less progressive on LGBTQ+ issues compared to other regions, these cultural norms are something visitors must navigate carefully.

Concerns for Jewish Tourists in the Region

In addition to concerns over LGBTQ+ rights, Jewish tourists have raised alarms due to the political tensions in the region. Those with ties to Israel, or those carrying Israeli passports, are advised to avoid wearing symbols or religious garments that may reveal their national identity. The escalation of political conflicts in the region has heightened sensitivities, and Jewish travelers are advised to be cautious in order to avoid any uncomfortable situations during their visit.

While Disney has not yet commented on these specific issues, the company has expressed its commitment to maintaining a welcoming environment for all visitors. As the new theme park prepares for construction, Disney’s efforts to ensure safety and inclusivity will be scrutinized, especially considering the complex cultural landscape of the UAE.

What Disney Has Planned

The theme park and resort will feature a variety of attractions inspired by Disney’s most beloved franchises. In addition to its themed rides and immersive lands, it promises to be a luxury destination complete with entertainment and accommodations that cater to visitors of all ages. With Disney’s involvement in Yas Island’s expanding development plans, the project is expected to draw large numbers of tourists, positioning the park as a significant addition to the region’s appeal.

As Disney moves forward with the development, many are wondering how the company will address the cultural concerns that have arisen. Will Disney’s commitment to inclusivity align with the UAE’s strict norms, or will guests need to make additional accommodations for their own safety?

Looking Ahead: A New Chapter in Disney’s Global Expansion

With construction already underway, the eyes of the world are on Disney’s latest project. As the theme park nears its opening, the company will need to strike a balance between offering world-class attractions while ensuring that all visitors—regardless of identity—can enjoy a safe, inclusive, and welcoming experience.

The new resort is part of Disney’s broader expansion efforts, but the challenges of navigating cultural and political sensitivities will likely play a key role in determining the success of this new venture. As more details emerge, the coming years will reveal how Disney addresses these concerns and what adjustments, if any, are made to ensure that the magic of Disney is accessible to everyone.

  1. I literally felt moved to write the White House about this. This is a HIGHLY un-American investment by a problematic corporate icon.

  2. You do know that homosexuality is a sin not only in the Islamic faith but also the Jewish and Christian faith right? The difference is Muslims stick to their values, while others pick and choose what they want to ignore.
