Kathy Najimy Explains Major Change In Mary Sanderson in ‘Hocus Pocus 2’

After months — well, really years — of waiting, Hocus Pocus 2 is finally available to stream on Disney+. Hocus Pocus 2 stars Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, who have returned to reprise their roles as Winifred, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson. The sequel tells the story of two teenage girls — Becca (Whitney Peak) and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo) — who accidentally light the Black Flame Candle and bring the Sanderson sisters back to life once again. Though times, and technology, have changed, the sisters’ goal of sucking the lives out of the children of Salem has not.

Since its September 30 premiere, Hocus Pocus fans have flocked to Disney+ to watch the sequel that was 29 years in the making. Disney has even shared that Hocus Pocus 2 broke Disney+ premiere records!

There’s a lot of nostalgia in the movie, but eagle-eyed watchers noticed something striking about Mary Sanderson — played by Kathy Najimy. In Hocus Pocus 2, Mary’s signature slanted smile has switched sides!

In the original film, Mary’s smile is always slanted to the right. In the sequel, Mary’s mouth is slanted to the left — a move that she improvised when they began filming. Najimy sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly to explain the change:

“It’s on the other side mainly because it’s so hard for me to do it on the side I did it on 30 years ago. I’m sure the fans are going to go into deep detail about why it’s on the other side. It’s just something I came up with the first week. This is a big comedy, so you don’t have to be subtle or have a 40-page Shakespearean backstory…

We can justify it because there’s a scene at the beginning where Winnie slaps me, and my mouth goes to the other side, and then she slaps me again and it goes to the other side, and sticks.”

Hocus Pocus 2 also stars Lilia Buckingham as Izzy and Becca’s friend Cassie, Tony Hale as Mayor Traske, and Sam Richardson as Gilbert. Doug Jones also returned to reprise his role as Billy Butcherson.
