Once you’re a part of the pirate’s life, you’re always a part of the pirate’s life.
For more than 10 years, Johnny Depp starred in one of Disney’s most iconic and successful live-action franchises — Pirates of the Caribbean.
The legendary Disney attraction was first brought to life in 2003 with the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. After that, there were four more movies following Captain Jack — Dead Man’s Chest (2006), At World’s End (2007), On Stranger Tides (2011), and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).

In 2018, Disney suddenly dropped Mr. Depp from its untitled Pirate of the Caribbean 6 project, after his ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic abuse. Depp ended up suing Heard for defamation and was awarded $15 million in damages. During the trial, Depp said that he would not come back to Disney, even if he was offered “$300 million and 1 million alpacas.”
Although his time with Disney seems to be over, Depp still fondly remembers his work on the films and the people he worked with.

On June 24, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides actor and legendary surfer Tamayo Perry was killed in a brutal shark attack. He was surfing in an area off of Hawaii’s North Shore called Goat Island. His body was found on the beach by other surfers, and he was reportedly missing an arm and a leg. Sadly, he could not be saved.
Depp recently shared a tribute to Mr. Perry in his Instagram stories.
Even though it was some years ago now, I remember Tamayo well. A lovely man, with a huge heart and zest for life..
Emilia, I send you all my love and strength. You are in my thoughts.
With love, Johnny. X
Since Depp’s firing from Pirates of the Caribbean 6, the Disney rumor mill has been swirling and a number of actors have been named as possible replacements for Captain Jack Sparrow. Originally, Barbie (2023) star Margot Robbie was set to take over in the lead role, but that script has been put on the back burner.
Elvis (2022) star Austin Butler’s name has also popped up. However, Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writer Terry Rossio have both said that they want Depp to return and for Captain Jack’s story to continue. Disney executives have also seemed to back down on their determination to distance themselves from the actor.

For Depp’s part, he has not addressed any plans to return to the Mouse House. Rumors said that he would be back, but he is currently working on his music and doing more work behind the camera.
Whether Depp returns to the franchise or not, Disney is moving forward. Bruckheimer recently revealed that, if everything goes the way it’s supposed to, casting for Pirates 6 will begin soon.
We continue to keep the family and friends of Tamayo Perry in our thoughts and prayers.
