It’s been seven years since Disney released the last film in its wildly popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl, was released in 2003, and fans went to the movie theaters in droves.
They loved that Disney brought one of its most iconic rides to life, but even more, they loved the film’s main character — Captain Jack Sparrow. Jack Sparrow was played by Johnny Depp, who made the buccaneer distinctly funny and self-centered while remaining extremely likable.

For the next nearly 15 years, fans flocked to the theaters to see the four follow-up films — Dead Man’s Chest (2006), At World’s End (2007), On Stranger Tides (2011), and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). The studio was also working on continuing Captain Jack’s story with a sixth film in the franchise.
Sadly, all those plans came crashing down in 2018 when an OpEd written by Depp’s ex-wife Amber was published in The Washington Post. The OpEd accused Depp of sexual, physical, mental, and emotional abuse. Depp disputed the charges and sued Heard for defamation and won. However, that did not stop him from being dropped by Disney.
It’s been two years since Depp won his defamation trial and seven years since Pirates 6 was announced. Despite Mr. Depp saying he would never return to Disney after the way they treated him, fans remain hopeful that his time as Captain Jack isn’t over yet.
And there is someone BIG in his corner, pushing for his return — iconic Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
In a recent interview with Collider, Mr. Bruckheimer dropped some MAJOR news on the upcoming sixth film. Disney has been struggling for years to come up with a decent script, even writing one with Barbie (2023) star Margot Robbie in the lead role. However, none of those scripts worked out.
“We’ve got a new script brewing, and hopefully Disney will be feelin’ piratey enough to make it happen.”
He also shared that if the project is approved, casting will begin this summer!
Back in September, Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin revealed that Disney had bought his Pirates of the Caribbean story, which surprised him. He said that the story was “weird” and he didn’t think Disney would go for it. But they were very impressed and, as far as we know, that is the story they are currently working on producing.
While Margot Robbie has said that her Pirates story is “dead at Disney,” Bruckheimer disagreed. He said that the story wasn’t right for now, but hopes they can develop it sometime in the future.
Who Will Be in the New Film
For months, rumors have been swirling about who will replace Johnny Depp’s lead role in the film. It is unlikely that Disney will get someone else to play Captain Jack, but a new pirate will possibly take over.

Aside from Margot Robbie, Disney was allegedly talking to Elvis (2022) star Austin Butler and Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld about potentially starring in the new film.
Neither actor has commented on a possible role in Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
However, if Jerry Bruckheimer has his way, Johnny Depp will be back.
“It’s a reboot, but let’s be real, the seas wouldn’t be the same without Jack. Love the guy, and he’s one heck of a pirate. We’ve talked, but gotta see how the wind blows.”
This is not the first time that Bruckheimer has spoken about bringing Johnny Depp back into the Disney fold. However, with Depp saying he would not return, even for “$300 million and one million alpacas,” we know it will not be easy.
Disney has also subtly hinted that they are willing to work with Mr. Depp. A Disney executive said that the company will never say never when it comes to actors they want to appear in their big-budget blockbusters.
Do you think Jerry Bruckheimer can convince Johnny Depp to return to Disney? Let us know in the comments!
Of course Disney fans wants Johnny Depp back but getting him back maybe a tough one
Pirate’s of the Caribbean is only if Johnny Depp is Captain Jack Sparrow as the star of the entire movie!!!
Depp set the standard for Pirates–doubtful another can pull it off as well as Johnny.
Depp is synonymous with Pirates.
