To hear about a January refurbishment isn’t exactly shocking news, especially a water ride. Most of Disney’s water rides go down during this time for maintenance. The weather is cooler and the crowds are much lower making it the perfect time to spruce up the ride and keep it in tip top shape.
Over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Kali River Rapids is going to be down in January for refurb. This is nothing new, the ride is typically closed from January to April each year. As we reported about Rock N Roller Coaster, these extended refurbishments are part of what set Disney apart from other theme parks. While rides at other parks tend to decline and decay with age, Disney rides stand the test of time because of their strict maintenance and upkeep regimen.
However, some have gotten concerned that the ride may be closing permanently. A recent report seems to have sparked a rumor that when Kali River Rapids closes on January 9, 2023, it will not reopen. This has led to an outcry on social media from people who live the ride. Rest assured, there is no truth to the rumor. Not only has Disney given no indication that the ride will close forever, it also wouldn’t make sense.
Disney has two major water rides, Kali River Rapids and Splash Mountain. The latter of course is closing on January 23, 2023 for the long awaited (and much debated) Princess and the Frog re-theme. The ride will be down for months as it undergoes this transformation. It wouldn’t make sense to close Kali River Rapids forever at this time.
Additionally, Animal Kingdom is currently in a state of flux. Dinoland is now extinct as it is transformed into something entirely new (what, we don’t yet know as Disney hasn’t been particularly forthcoming on any particular plans). With almost an entire land down, closing Kali wouldn’t make sense when the ride is desperately needed to keep Guests busy.
We don’t think Kali River Rapids is going anywhere but as always, stay tuned right here as we bring you the latest in Disney news, food, and more! We will keep an eye on the situation and bring you any updates.
