There’s been much talk about the Walt Disney Company’s relatively low profits in recent years, but it just shelled out $1 million for the newest phase of Disney’s 100th anniversary celebration. While $1 million is insignificant for a company currently worth more than $155 billion, it makes a big difference for those on the receiving end. Disney’s Create 100 campaign recognizes this and hopes to use that money in support of creativity.
Today Disney launched a global campaign called Create 100, in “a celebration of creativity marking 100 years of Disney storytelling.” In addition to the $1 million, donations included pieces of and experiences in art, fashion, and music inspired by Disney characters, as well as Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, etc. All donations are meant to benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation as they work to grant “life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.”
The 6-foot tall ‘Structural Sorcerer — a Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Sculpture’ was the main event as far as Disney’s Create 100 artwork goes. Located at the Royal College of Art in London, Disney paired with Virgil Abloh Securities to commission this design by ALASKA ALASKA. The late Virgil Abloh was a fashion designer known for his grid furniture series and a 2018 Mickey Mouse illustration.
More artwork and items are to be unveiled over the rest of the summer and auctioned off for Make-A-Wish. The Create 100 celebration contributions include items/ experiences from top names like Beyoncé, Christian Louboutin, Tommy Hilfiger, adidas, Pandora, Coach, and more.
Tasia Filippatos, President, Consumer Products, Games and Publishing offered this sentiment,
Disney’s timeless stories and characters have made an indelible mark on pop culture around the globe, transcending borders, industries, and generations. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor 100 years of Disney storytelling than by collaborating with this outstanding collective of visionaries in support of Make-A-Wish.
Other Walt Disney 100th Anniversary celebrations stretch across Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, to Walt Disney Animation Studios, the D23 Expo, and more! Those who can’t get to Disney Parks in celebration can enjoy features on Disney+ at home or see the new Disney Movie Wish in theaters this November.
