On Tuesday, the Walt Disney Company cleaned house at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
On Sunday, March 12, Disney-owned ABC will broadcast the 95th Oscars ceremony with late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel returning to emcee the year’s biggest night in the film and movie industry.

It’s the first Oscars presentation since the infamous 94th annual Academy Awards, held in 2022, during which the cast of Disney’s Encanto, accompanied by singer/songwriter Megan Thee Stallion, performed “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” live on stage. But sadly, the most memorable part of the night’s festivities was the “slap heard ’round the world.”
Comedian Chris Rock took to the stage to present an award, and after noticing Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith seated in the first row of Guests, he began to interact with the couple, ultimately making a comment about Pinkett-Smith’s very close haircut. Rock referenced the film, G. I. Jane, when speaking about Pinkett-Smith’s hair, and none of it sat well with Will Smith, who stood to his feet, approached the stage, and walked up to Rock, slapping him across the face.
Because of the incident, Chris Rock turned down the opportunity to host the 2023 Oscars, and Will Smith was banned from the Academy for ten years.
But news yesterday gives movie fans a renewed excitement for the 95th Academy Awards–especially if they double as Disney fans.
