Back in 2020, it was reported that Disney was working on a new original series for Disney+ that would feature Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Walt Disney has lost the rights to Oswald — one of his first creations — to Universal all the way back in 1928. But in 2006, new CEO Bob Iger managed to regain the rights to Oswald when he convinced NBCUniversal to give the rights to him as part of the deal to let a famous sportscaster out of his ABC contract. Disney has owned the rights to Oswald ever since and the fun rabbit can even be seen in Disney California Adventure Park at Disneyland Resort.
Ever since launching Disney+ in 2019, Disney has promised a ton of original programming based on the hundreds of intellectual properties (IPs) they own. One of those series was supposed to be based on the lucky rabbit, but sadly, it seems that Disney has decided to not move forward with the project.
Matt Danner, a long-time animation filmmaker, shared the news on Twitter, stating that Disney decided to stop all work on the show, even though they were already well into production. Danner commented on a story about Iger’s acquisition of Oswald, tweeting:
Iger was very serious about it. The Legend of the Three Caballeros team was going to follow up with an Oswald show for steaming [sic]. Scripts written, designs done, animation test in hand, and a pilot in production. It was beautiful! Then we got broken up and scattered to the wind.

Many who saw the tweet were devastated to learn that the Oswald project was not moving forward. However, Danner followed up with a tweet saying that, just because his version of the project has been canceled, that does not mean that Disney doesn’t have another Oswald project in the works.
Hey gang! Don’t be sad about this. Oswald has A LOT of love within Disney. I just wanted to share how serious that love is. I’m sure there will be an Oswald project coming your way in the near future.
Lots of people jumping to conclusions here. No one is saying there is no Oswald content in development. Just saying MY TEAM’S version has not been in development for a few years. I wanted to share how passionate and serious myself and the folks at Disney are about Oswald.

At this time, Disney has not confirmed that Danner’s Oswald project has been canceled, nor have they confirmed that they are still working on another Oswald project to stream on Disney+ in the future.
Are you hoping that Disney brings a series to Disney+ featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit?
