‘Toy Story 5′ Update: Why Pixar Scrapped Tom Hanks’ Woody

Toy Story 5 brings Woody back into the spotlight, but that wasn’t always the case.

That revelation comes as Pixar prepares to reunite the franchise’s most iconic characters for another adventure, seven years after Toy Story 4 appeared to give Woody a definitive farewell.

The upcoming sequel places Bonnie’s toys in unfamiliar territory. Instead of competing with another toy for a child’s attention, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of the gang find themselves confronting a challenge many parents know all too well: screens.

When Bonnie becomes captivated by a new tablet device named Lilypad, the toys are forced to navigate a world where technology increasingly dominates playtime.

The setup creates an immediate storytelling problem.

By the end of Toy Story 4, Woody had left Bonnie behind. After helping Bo Peep, he chose a new life away from a child’s bedroom, seemingly bringing his decades-long journey to a close.

Yet the Toy Story 5 trailer clearly shows him back alongside his old friends.

As it turns out, Pixar initially struggled with exactly how to make that happen.

Pixar Couldn’t Find a Place for Woody

Speaking to CinemaBlend, writer and director Andrew Stanton revealed that Woody was completely absent from the first version of the script.

ā€œI do admit that I didn’t know how to bring him back at first, and so I just, ’cause I know it’s gonna take so many drafts to get the movie right, I just wrote the first one without him just to see if I missed him.ā€

The approach served as a creative test.

Rather than forcing Woody into the story because audiences expected him, Stanton wanted to determine whether the sequel genuinely needed the character.

The answer became obvious.

ā€œAnd, I did,ā€ he continued. ā€œSo I said, alright, we’re gonna have to work a little harder and figure out how to make this not just a knee-jerk reaction and make it something that’s earned to make ’em come in.ā€

That meant solving a problem created by Toy Story 4‘s ending rather than simply ignoring it.

Woody’s departure remains one of the most emotional moments in the franchise. Reversing it without a compelling reason risked undermining the previous film’s conclusion.

Pixar eventually found a solution.

ā€œWe finally figured it out and now I can’t imagine it any other way,ā€ Stanton said.

Early footage suggests Woody has remained connected to the group despite leaving Bonnie’s room behind.

The trailer shows him communicating with Jessie via walkie-talkie before eventually reuniting with the other toys.

Even so, Stanton insisted that nostalgia alone was never enough justification.

Why Woody Still Sits at the Center of ‘Toy Story’

The director explained that every major character must serve a purpose.

ā€œMy rule is if you take something out, especially a character, would the story be able to happen with or without them? And if it can’t, that means good, that they had to be essential no matter how much, it may not be obvious that they’re the role they’re playing in the movie.ā€

Few characters meet that standard more than Woody.

Since Toy Story debuted in 1995, the cowboy has served as the emotional heart of the franchise. His rivalry with Buzz Lightyear, his relationship with Andy, and his eventual goodbye to childhood have shaped many of the series’ defining moments.

That legacy helps explain why Pixar ultimately decided the story worked better with him than without him.

Still, Toy Story 5 is not expected to focus solely on Woody.

Tim Allen previously suggested the film is heavily centered on Jessie, potentially giving Joan Cusack’s character her biggest role in the franchise to date.

The sequel also brings back several familiar faces.

Returning characters include Buzz Lightyear, Forky, Rex, Hamm, Slinky Dog, Trixie, Dolly, Combat Carl, Mr. Pricklepants, and Duke Caboom.

New additions include Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, a toilet-training tech toy.

Bad Bunny has joined the cast as Pizza with Sunglasses, while Craig Robinson voices Atlas, a GPS-themed hippo toy.

Alan Cumming is also set to appear as an evil version of Bullseye.

The film has generated additional attention thanks to ongoing fan speculation surrounding Taylor Swift.

Pixar recently addressed theories linking the singer to the project, with Stanton admitting the studio would be “frickin’ honored” to work with her before clarifying that the completed version of the film did not feature a Taylor Swift song over the end credits.

Whether Woody’s return ultimately resonates with audiences remains to be seen.

For Pixar, however, the answer became clear during the writing process.

After experimenting with a version of Toy Story 5 that left its most famous character behind, the studio concluded the story simply wasn’t complete without him.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.

Are you glad that Woody’s returning in Toy Story 5?
