HBO Will Rewrite JK Rowling’s Famous ‘Harry Potter’ Malfoy Villain With New Plot and Backstory
The show will take a different path with the Malfoy villain.
HBO’s Harry Potter television adaptation is entering a turbulent stretch as it prepares for Season 2, with a wave of casting changes arriving alongside reports that the writing process has hit real trouble behind the scenes.
Season 2 is set to adapt J.K. Rowling’s 1998 novel Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which follows a series of petrifying attacks on Hogwarts students secretly orchestrated by a possessed Ginny Weasley, who is manipulated by Tom Riddle’s enchanted diary. The arc culminates in Ginny’s abduction into the Chamber and Harry’s confrontation with a teenage Voldemort and the Basilisk.
Gracie Cochrane, who played Ginny in Season 1, will not return for the sequel season. HBO has cited only “unforeseen circumstances” for her exit, offering no further detail. Bonnie Hill, known for Film Club and The Six Triple Eight (2024), has been cast as her replacement.
Hill joins several other new additions built specifically around the Chamber of Secrets‘ plot. Lenny Rush will voice Dobby, the house-elf whose interference with Harry’s plans forms a major throughline of the book. Billy Barratt has been cast as the teenage version of Tom Riddle, the character at the center of the diary mystery.
The shake-up extends further: Nicholas Hoult has departed the role of Gilderoy Lockhart, the vain professor who supplies much of the book’s comic relief, with Game of Thrones alum Kit Harington stepping in to replace him.
Lucius Malfoy Gets an Earlier Introduction — and a New Backstory
Among the season’s most notable changes is the expanded role given to Lucius Malfoy, now played by Johnny Flynn (Lovesick, One Life), taking over a character long associated with Jason Isaacs across the Wizarding World film franchise. Isaacs’ portrayal became one of the series’ more memorable performances — the platinum hair, the cane hiding his wand, and a gradual unraveling from cold authority in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) to a diminished figure by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 (2011).
Unlike the books and films, which don’t introduce Lucius until Chamber of Secrets, HBO’s series brings him in a book earlier, giving the show room to establish his relationship with Draco before Lucius becomes a more prominent figure in Season 2 and essentially rewriting this character’s journey.
Speaking to Radio Times, Flynn described the approach behind his version of the character: “He was one of those kids bullied in his school, and he’s now turned into the bully, so he doesn’t know another way,” the actor said. “That’s how I want to play him, because I know those people quite well. On the one hand, they were the people who bullied me; they were the abusers, but at some point, they were the abused. So, nobody’s outright good or bad in the world.”
Not everyone is convinced the reinterpretation serves the character. Screen Rant itself has pushed back on the added backstory, noting: “Canonically, Lucius was never bullied, and his coldness and cruelty came from his family and upbringing, not how he was treated at school. Lucius came from a respectable family of wizards who believed in pure-blood values and wizards’ superiority, thus looking down on Muggle-born witches and wizards and Muggles in general.”
The new cast members join a roster that already includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, alongside adult cast members John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu, Janet McTeer, Warwick Davis, and Nick Frost as Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, Flitwick, and Hagrid, respectively.
A 2028 Release Now Looks Optimistic
HBO and Max content chief Casey Bloys has already dampened hopes for annual installments of the series, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “For some of the bigger shows like Harry Potter or House of the Dragon, or The Last of Us, huge world-building shows, it would be nice to have those on an annual basis, but from a production point of view, it’s just not possible.”
New reporting suggests the timeline may be slipping even further than that cautious framing implied. Season 2 was reportedly scheduled to begin filming in August, but that date has now moved to October after Warner Bros. executives rejected early script drafts over concerns with plot and character development.
A source told The Sun: “Filming for series two was meant to start in August. We had dates to start filming, but the scripts have not been finished… The cost implications are huge,” adding that “many staff are stood down from next week.”
The same insider indicated the delay stems from unresolved script issues: “The scripts haven’t been signed off, prompting the delay,” noting that “a number of scenes need tweaking because they are not quite right” as “the powers-that-be want everything perfect.” With casting still shifting and scripts reportedly unfinished, HBO’s Harry Potter faces a longer road to Season 2 than previously expected.
