Whoopi Goldberg has long been known for her candid opinions on various subjects throughout her career, especially during her tenure on ABC’s The View. Since joining the talk show nearly 20 years ago, she has often engaged in lively debates with her co-hosts, often not shying away from contentious topics. Her outspoken nature has both garnered strong support and incited backlash over the years.

Notable incidents include her defense of Bill Cosby during his allegations in 2015, for which she later apologized after evidence against him was revealed. In 2022, her comments regarding the Holocaust led to a two-week suspension from the show.

Recently, Goldberg’s approach to expressing her views led her to the center of yet another controversy during her 69th birthday celebration on The View. During the show, she shared a platter of Charlotte Russe — a dessert that has special significance for her, as her mother loved it.

However, the celebration turned sour when Goldberg accused Holtermann’s Bakery of refusing her order. She claimed that the bakery cited technical issues, yet the desserts were available for other customers, prompting speculation about political bias against her due to her outspoken views. These claims were made publicly in front of a national audience and attracted extensive media coverage.

It is important to note that Goldberg never said the name of the bakery.

In response to Goldberg’s accusations, Jill Holtermann, the owner of Holtermann’s Bakery, firmly denied any wrongdoing. She explained that the bakery experienced boiler issues that prevented them from fulfilling Goldberg’s initial order placed several days in advance.

Holtermann clarified that while she could not ensure delivery due to equipment problems, the bakery was ultimately able to serve desserts for pickups later that day.

Holtermann’s Bakery, which boasts a rich history spanning 145 years in Staten Island, is well-loved in the community, and its owner expressed frustration over being characterized as politically motivated when it was merely a matter of operational capability.

Ms. Holtermann spoke with Entertainment Weekly and explained the situation:

“They’d asked us and we were having trouble with our boilers,” Holtermann says, adding that Goldberg initially requested treats for a Nov. 6 appearance on a talk show, and for the Nov. 13 broadcast of The View — both of which she declined because she “didn’t want to make a commitment that I can’t carry through” over the uncertainty of her equipment. She also confirms that an unidentified woman picked up around 50 Charlotte Russe desserts from the bakery at 7:30 a.m. ET Wednesday morning, which she was able to make — but didn’t want to commit to ahead of time over ongoing boiler issues. She adds that she was not aware of any affiliations that the woman who picked up the desserts on Wednesday morning might have had, with regard to The View or otherwise.

“I said to Whoopi, ‘I can’t do it right now,” she adds. “We have so many things going on with my boiler,’ because the building is from 1930, so, when she called me, I had no idea [if we could] be baking everything.”

The public’s reaction to the situation has been mixed, but significant political figures have commented on the unfolding drama. Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella publicly supported Holtermann’s Bakery, asserting that the bakery is not politically oriented and that Goldberg’s implications were unfounded.

Fossella called for Goldberg to apologize for allegedly defaming the establishment, referring to her remarks as “besmirched and defamed.”

  1. WELL WELL WELL NOW DOES DISNEY WANT THIS WOMAN!!!! WHOOPIE GOLDBERG at the beautiful Candlelight Processional due to the outrage And slander that she is causing against a BAKERY that was broke down and wasn’t able to deliver her birthday pastries on the VIEW (trash show) for everyone to see it was her birthday big deal!!!!! She is a disgusting ABC representative and should not be here for the candlelight processional

  2. Whoopie should ABSOLUTELY apologize. She assumed it was political and began to seek her revenge by trying to ruin the bakeries reputation. I believe that is called slander and the bakery can sue.

    • I gree Whoopie should absolutely apologize. We all know what happens when you assume and Whoopie proved that it is true when you assume. Is she that self centered or is she just visious and attacks anyone who who does not cater to her whims. She and the rest of cast of the View need to keep their political views out of the media and take care of their own business not their viewers. If this had been my business you can bet I would be filing a lawsuit for deframation and slander.

  3. According to the article, Ms. Goldberg never said the name of the article. If that is the case then I am not sure she did a anything wrong.

    • Whoopie is a very divisive person, Her opinion doesn’t matter. She should apologize and step down. If not she should be sued for slander and fired. She is disgusting.

    • I saw that episode. No, Whoopi should not apologize. She never said the bakery’s name, AND the bakery owner chose to out herself.
It’s curious why the owner was able to make the same amount of desserts when they were ordered by Whoopi’s assistant just 48 hours before the show. If the owner made the desserts for Whoopi, the amount of good publicity for her store would have been tremendous. Obviously, there was something else at play in the owners mind.

  4. She should apologize. It seems when certain people are told sorry I can’t, these same people jump to either political affiliations or race. If Whoopi had been actually listening to the owner of the bakery, she would have heard that there was a real problem that affects the baking of the treats. Seriously, can people just take a breath and calm down. It’s not about you. In the real world there are issues that are beyond control.

  5. Apologize, and stop screaming negativity and be a role model.
