Where Did the Fans Go? Figment’s Meet-and-Greet at EPCOT Is a Ghost Town

A recent viral video circulating on social media highlights a noticeable shift in Figment’s popularity at EPCOT, as the beloved purple dragon stands alone at his meet-and-greet spot with no visitors in sight. Just a few years ago, Figment was one of the most beloved characters at the park, with fans eagerly waiting for hours to meet him, especially following the release of his limited-edition popcorn bucket. Now, the character seems to have lost some of his once-massive appeal, and the video capturing this empty meet-and-greet has caused fans to reflect on what’s changed.

Figment, the mischievous little dragon, has been a staple of EPCOT for decades, said Disney enthusiasts and park historians. Introduced in the 1980s as part of the Journey Into Imagination attraction, Figment became a symbol of EPCOT’s commitment to creativity and innovation. Over the years, he developed a loyal following, becoming one of the park’s most iconic characters. However, despite his decades-long presence, the recent video showing Figment waiting for visitors without any in line is striking, especially considering the fervor that surrounded him not too long ago.

A Fan-Fave Leaves Public Eye

The video, posted on X, shows Figment at the entrance to the Journey Into Imagination pavilion, where his meet-and-greet spot has been a fixture for years. Once a busy location filled with excited fans, the area now sits empty. This stark visual contrast underscores how much his popularity has declined over the years.

In 2023, Figment experienced a massive surge in popularity due to the release of a limited-edition popcorn bucket in honor of Journey Into Imagination’s 40th anniversary. The bucket, which was sold exclusively at EPCOT, became a hot commodity, with Disney fans lining up for hours to get their hands on one, recalls Disney fanatics. The excitement surrounding the bucket showed how Figment could still spark immense fan fervor, with many waiting for long periods just to secure the exclusive merchandise.

At the time, Figment appeared to be undergoing a renaissance of sorts, driven by nostalgia and the buzz surrounding the bucket. However, just one year later, the enthusiasm had largely dissipated. The bucket’s popularity was so intense that many fans were forced to wait in long queues. Yet, now, Figment’s once-bustling meet-and-greet has become eerily quiet, with very few fans taking part in the experience.

What Happened to the Craze

So, what’s behind this dramatic drop in interest? A key factor in Figment’s declining appeal could be the changing tastes of Disney fans. Younger generations are more drawn to newer franchises such as Frozen, Star Wars, and Marvel, all of which have been integrated into EPCOT’s newer offerings. As a result, Figment’s quirky, retro charm may no longer resonate with a younger audience more familiar with contemporary Disney characters.

Additionally, the oversaturation of Figment-themed merchandise and events in the wake of his popcorn bucket’s success may have played a role in diminishing interest. Once seen as a rare and charming character, Figment’s sudden ubiquity in Disney marketing may have led some fans to lose interest.

For those still enamored with Figment, the empty meet-and-greet offers a chance to enjoy a quieter, more intimate experience with the character. But the question remains: will this lull in attention spark a renewed interest in Figment, or has the purple dragon’s time in the spotlight passed for good?
