After 23 Years, Universal Changes Its ‘Jaws’ Ride

One Universal theme park has made a significant update to its Jaws attraction.

If you, like us, miss the Jaws ride at Universal Orlando Resort, you’ll know that there’s only one place left to experience the ride in all its glory (and no, Universal Studios Hollywood doesn’t count).

Universal Studios Japan currently boasts the only fully-fledged Jaws (1975) ride in the world. First opened in 2001, it’s pretty much the same as the version once found at Universal Studios Florida – before the Wizarding World of Harry Potter moved in and ruined everything – except it hasn’t had quite as many operational issues as its now-closed sister in Orlando (which notoriously faced recurrent downtime in its early years, to the point that Universal sued its designer).

Updates to Universal’s Jaws Ride

Japan’s version shows no signs of closing any time soon. However, it did just undergo a big update. As of November 22, 2024, the ride now operates on biodiesel made from waste cooking oil sourced from the park’s many restaurants. The oil, such as leftover potato frying oil, is mixed with a small amount of diesel to fuel the boats.

This change aligns with Universal Studios Japan’s ongoing commitment to sustainability under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, “LOVE HAS NO LIMIT.”

The park aims to reduce its environmental impact and make better use of resources, and the shift to biodiesel is one of the steps taken in that direction.

The Jaws ride itself remains unchanged in terms of the experience. Guests still embark on the iconic boat ride through Amity Island, where they come face to face with a realistic animatronic shark. The update does not affect the thrilling, tense atmosphere that has made the attraction a favorite among visitors to the park.

Other Developments at Universal Studios Japan

In addition to the Jaws update, Universal Studios Japan is preparing for the debut of Donkey Kong Country, an area inspired by Nintendo’s popular video games. The new land, featuring the Mine Cart Madness coaster, will officially open on December 11, 2024, though it is already in soft opening. Visitors can explore the area early, with strict guidelines in place to prevent early leaks of photos and videos.

Universal is also in the midst of its 2024 holiday celebrations, which will feature the park’s iconic Christmas tree for the last time. This marks the final season for the massive holiday display, making it a special event for parkgoers.
