Universal Studios Japan has rolled out stricter policies to address safety concerns following a string of incidents involving umbrellas at the WaterWorld show.

Known for its thrilling, action-packed stunts and splash-zone seats, WaterWorld has become a must-see attraction. However, recent guest behavior has led the theme park to implement new guidelines for visitor conduct.

With five resorts worldwide, Universal offers unforgettable movie-inspired experiences for all ages. The flagship, Universal Orlando Resort, includes two major theme parks, a water park, and the highly anticipated Epic Universe park scheduled to open in May 2025. But even beyond Orlando, Universal’s parks around the globe bring unique and exciting attractions to guests.

Over in Beijing, guests can experience Transformers: Metrobase, home to a Decepticon Driller-themed coaster modeled after The Incredible Hulk Coaster. Universal Studios Japan also offers exclusive attractions like the Flying Dinosaur, Space Fantasy—The Ride (which will reopen after two years in January), and Hollywood Dream—The Ride, making it a hot spot for thrill-seekers.

While each Universal park is home to unique attractions, some feature near-replicas of Hollywood and Orlando classics, including Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Jurassic Park: The Ride, and WaterWorld.

Like the Hollywood original, the stunt show is based on the 1995 film of the same name and takes place shortly after the end of the movie, with Helen returning from “Dryland” to get her friends from the “Atoll.”

Recently, the WaterWorld show in Japan has been a topic of discussion as audience members, eager to dodge the splash zone, have begun using umbrellas during the performance. This has reportedly caused disruptions among guests, prompting Universal Studios Japan to address the issue.

A recent update to the Universal Studios Japan app now warns visitors that umbrellas are prohibited in the WaterWorld theater due to safety concerns. The move aims to prevent future disturbances and improve the experience for all guests.

These changes mark the latest in a series of rule adjustments at Universal Studios Japan in response to visitor behavior. Earlier this year, the Osaka theme park considered stricter guidelines when children entered restricted areas during the Kuromi Live show.

Conversely, Universal Studios Japan recently lifted its ban on photography during the Jaws ride, permitting guests to take photos and videos beginning May 28, 2024. The decision follows widespread demand and the challenges of enforcing the previous policy.

“Starting Tuesday, May 28, 2024, photography and videography will be permitted on Jaws,” reported USJ 1. With so many visitors capturing moments during the ride, park operations were revised to accommodate guest interest.”
