When Disney’s streaming service Disney+ was launched in 2019, Disney promised that the new platform would always be seeing new, original programming. In the two years since, Disney has released more than 80 original series on Disney+. There have been series released for Marvel fans, like Loki and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Star Wars fans have been able to get their fix with The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Disney die-hards have been treated to incredible series’ like The Imagineering Story, Behind the Attraction, and The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse.
The Disney+ original series library keeps growing, and now we have been told that two new series will be coming to the service soon. Disney revealed that Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria will be producing the show Paola Santiago and the River of Tears. The second series will be based on the Judy Blume novel Superfudge and will be directed by the Russo brothers — most well-known for their extensive work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Deadline Hollywood reported on the news, sharing more information about Longoria’s Paola Santiago and the River of Tears. Per Deadline:
Written by [Kevin] Rodriguez, Paola Santiaga and the River of Tears is a fantasy/adventure television series based on the novel and published by Disney-Hyperion under the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. Inspired by the legend of La Llorona (the Weeping Woman), the story introduces a teen girl, Paola Santiago, who has always relied on hard science and logic to make sense of the world, unlike her mother, who believes in magic. But folklore becomes fact when Paola’s best friend goes missing, and to save her, Paola has to enter a world of mind-bending monsters and relentless spirits steeped in Latin folklore that defy both logic and legend.
However, Disney+ is not the only Disney Branded Television division getting a new show. In addition to Paolo Santiago and the River of Tears and Superfudge coming to Disney+, Disney Junior is also getting a new series. The new show — called Tiny Trailblazers — will be produced by Reese Witherspoon’s production company in conjunction with Disney Junior.
Here is more information on Tiny Trailblazers:
Witherspoon (Little Fires Everywhere, The Morning Show) serves as executive producer and will voice one of the mom characters, Fern, a wildlife specialist. The main characters are two girls, an adventurous city kid named Tilly and the more risk-averse Birdie, who befriends her when Tilly’s family moves to a campground while her scientist mom is doing field research on forest streams. As the girls observe their mother’s careers and interests and begin to explore and discover the magic of nature all around them, they develop a supportive friendship and a deep understanding of and appreciation for the natural world. The series also highlights age-appropriate social and emotional lessons about thoughtfulness, self-esteem, good instincts and trying new things.
At this time, no other casting information has been announced. There have also been no announced dates for filming or timelines given for release. DisneyDining.com will keep readers updated as more information is revealed on these exciting new shows.
