The characteristically stoic and blunt Harrison Ford may not seem like one to fool around, but apparently, the set of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was full of pranks. The prolific Indy actor welcomed newcomer actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, to the franchise like a close friend, and the two enjoyed messing with each other for the span of filming. Waller-Bridge shared some of the dirt with Entertainment Weekly about the pranks on the Indiana Jones 5 set!
Phoebe Waller-Bridge revealed that the co-stars jokingly called each other names on set and described it as an extraordinary experience. Here’s what she told EW:
The most extraordinary thing about working with Harrison is that you’re definitely at work — in that his work ethic is so on point, and his discipline is so extraordinary — but because he’s that specific and the foundation of the work is really strong, the rest of it can be really fun…There were a lot of pranks… lots of pranks.”
She recalls an instance involving hyper-realistic masks of a young Harrison Ford and herself that were made for their stunt doubles to wear on set. Waller-Bridge used the mask of Ford’s face and hid in his trailer to surprise him. When she jumped out she claims, “It scared the crap out of him!”
Apparently, a terrified Harrison Ford is very on brand, as Phoebe Waller-Bridge describes his terror as “him blinking three times and saying, ‘Get the hell out of my trailer.’” But it was all in good fun, because the mask pranking didn’t end there. Only twenty minutes later, Ford got her back by wearing the mask of her face and shocking her!
The ever-impenetrable Harrison Ford commented that he “didn’t think of it as a ‘prank.’ But yes [they] spent a lot of time fooling around.” Ford is humble in his description because, according to Waller-Bridge, he even tied his shirt in a bow to match her costume as he surprised her with the mask. As Hollywood already knows, Harrison Ford is committed to his characters.
Waller-Bridge was grateful to the prank atmosphere for taking some of the pressure off of working on such an iconic franchise.
