Early last year, Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp went through a heated defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard. For six weeks, the former couple went back and forth, claiming abuse by the other, and talking about how Heard’s OpEd, and the subsequent fallout from it, affected both of their lives. During the trial, Depp testified that, because of Heard’s article, he was dropped by Disney for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, which cost him $22 million. In the end, the jury awarded Depp more than $10 million for defamation, and Heard received $2 million.

For months, there has been a lot of speculation about what will happen to Disney’s most successful live-action franchise. According to multiple reports, Disney was working with Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie on launching an entirely new story for the franchise. However, a few months ago, Robbie said that her story was “dead at Disney”Pirates producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, said that the film is not “entirely dead” and he hopes to make the film at some point in the future.

Not long after that, it was reported that Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien was in talks to lead the franchise. O’Brien never confirmed those stories, and now, another name has come to the top of the list. According to Giant Freakin’ Robot, Disney sources have told them that Stranger Things star Maya Hawke is being considered for a lead role in the new Pirates story.

The world is patiently waiting to see if Johnny Depp is going to return to the Pirates franchise, and while that could still happen, there has been more movement on other reboot ideas. Through our trusted and proven sources, we can report that Maya Hawke is in talks for a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot that will look to focus on younger actors. This is interesting considering Margot Robbie was initially meant to lead the new reboot, though that movie might have been placed on the back burner.

At this time, it seems that most fans want to see one person take the lead role in any new Pirates of the Caribbean film — Johnny Depp. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that that will happen. During the trial, Depp said that he wouldn’t work with Disney for “$300 million and 1 million alpacas”. Jerry Bruckheimer said that he would love to work with Depp on another Pirates film, so we’ll never say never.

Bruckheimer has also said that two Pirates scripts are in the works, but we have no details on potential storylines.
