The Death of a Beloved Star
Matthew Perry was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles-area home on October 28, 2023. Paramedics arrived on the scene but were unable to resuscitate Perry. He died at the age of 54.
Perry had numerous acting roles in film and television, but he is best remembered as the lovable–and sarcastic–Chandler Bing on the Emmy Award-winning sitcom Friends, alongside actresses Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, and Jennifer Aniston and actors Matt Leblanc and David Schwimmer. The sitcom aired on NBC from 1994 to 2004 and quickly became a fan favorite.
News of Perry’s untimely and sudden death began to spread, and many friends and fans assumed Perry died of an apparent drowning, though an autopsy was performed to determine his cause of death for certain.
No Signs of Foul Play
Los Angeles Police officers who arrived at Perry’s home on the day he was reported unconscious in his hot tub found no evidence of foul play, and no drugs were found at the scene, except for those prescribed by Perry’s doctors.
But because of Perry’s very public struggles with alcohol abuse and substance abuse, many friends and fans feared that something else might be to blame for the actor’s death.
Perry’s manner of death was ruled an accident, per an autopsy report, which became public in December 2023.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s autopsy report, Matthew Perry’s death was caused by the acute effects of the powerful dissociative anesthetic drug ketamine. Other contributing factors included drowning, buprenorphine effects–referring to a medication used to treat opioid use disorder–and coronary artery disease.
The report noted that Perry’s serum ketamine levels were higher than expected. Though it is known that he was undergoing ketamine treatments at the time of his death, his last treatment was more than a week before his passing.
It was this revelation that ultimately led to the undertaking of a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Perry’s death.
A Criminal Probe Begins
In December, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner officially closed its investigation into Perry’s death. But in May 2023, a criminal probe began to determine how Perry ultimately received the fatal dose of ketamine.
So far, the investigation has yielded several interesting findings, including the identity of a celebrity who may have played a role in Perry’s death. In June, it was revealed that Brooke Mueller, actor Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife, had been questioned multiple times in connection with the case.
Mueller was forced to surrender her iPhone and her laptop, which she reportedly did without incident.
Then it was revealed that “multiple people” could be charged in connection with Perry’s death. The investigation further revealed that the fatal dose of ketamine was purchased online.
Now it has been revealed that a second celebrity has been identified as having played a possible role in Perry’s death.
A Second Celebrity Involved
According to a source close to the investigation, a second celebrity has been found to possibly have been involved in securing the fatal dose of ketamine.
The unnamed celebrity and Perry both claimed to be sober, but according to the source, they were “walking pharmacies” who may have “aided” each other in their addictions by referring them to the other’s physician when they began to run low on the drug.
There’s also alleged photo evidence of Matthew and this celebrity at the office of a doctor who prescribes ketamine, which raises additional questions in the case.
At this time, the identity of the second celebrity has not been released, but as the investigation reportedly draws to a close, it’s likely that more information will be revealed in the coming days and weeks.
