Marvel fans have been left disappointed after the confirmation of a fan-favorite TV show’s cancellation.
To say that Marvel’s TV efforts on Disney+ have been a mix of highs and lows would be an understatement. While the studio has delivered its fair share of ambitious storytelling, it’s also faced challenges in consistency with some shows receiving more praise than others.
Although early successes such as WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye showcased the studio’s ability to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe with unique narratives, later efforts like Secret Invasion and Echo have struggled to engage even long-time fans of the MCU.
One of its more recent entries, Agatha All Along, proved more popular with audiences. At present, the series – which focuses on Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) trying to regain her former powers post-WandaVision – boasts an 84% critical score and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, anyone hoping for a second outing faces disappointment. According to Patti LuPone, who played Lilia Calderu in the show, there are zero plans for another season.
Talking to Andy Cohen on his Sirius XM podcast series Andy Cohen Live, LuPone revealed that she heard as much directly from showrunner Jac Schaffer.
“[Schaffer] said, ‘I don’t do second seasons,'” LuPone added. “She said, ‘They wanted me to do a second season of WandaVision and I didn’t.’ She said, ‘There’s too much to write,’ so she does one-offs and I’m really hoping and praying that someday I get to work with her again because she’s magic.”
Fans Left Devastated
Fans aren’t happy about the end of Agatha All Along.
“WAIT WHAT???” wrote one fan on X, formerly known as Twitter. “You can’t just make one of the best marvel products and then dip on us like that??? The show had the lowest budget of any of the MCU Disney series and ended up being one of the best stories. We need more Agatha and Wiccan and the search for Tommy!!”
Another X user wrote: “This is why I’ve stopped watching Disney… You can’t get a season two for series you like…. And if you do get another season, it’s two years before it comes on… How in the world do you operate a streaming channel like this?”
Marvel Axes More TV Shows
Realistically, we shouldn’t be too surprised that Agatha All Along won’t return for round two.
With the exception of Loki and What If?, Marvel has limited most of its shows to one season. While the upcoming Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (which is set in an alternate timeline to the MCU) and Daredevil: Born Again have already been confirmed to receive multiple seasons, it seems like the studio is reluctant to stretch its shows too far.
This follows a general period of ups and downs for Marvel. The studio has released a series of cinematic duds as well as Disney+ flops in recent years, with some speculating that the show has diluted its popularity by overproducing content. The end result is a franchise that feels more like homework than a hobby.
