In fall 2024, Marvel fans were treated to a magical journey down the Witches’ Road with Agatha All Along, a Disney+ spinoff of the groundbreaking WandaVision. Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness, who stole every scene as the seemingly quirky neighbor Agnes before being revealed as a powerful sorceress, finally took center stage in her own series. The show explored her rich history, her mystical connections, and her efforts to regain the power stripped from her by Wanda Maximoff.

Hahn’s arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe three years earlier made waves. In WandaVision, she seamlessly transitioned from comic relief to sinister mastermind, orchestrating Wanda’s sitcom-style reality while hiding in plain sight as a nosy neighbor. The finale saw Wanda ascend as the Scarlet Witch, leaving Agatha powerless and trapped in Westview, where fans found her as Agatha All Along began.

The series not only delved into Agatha’s backstory but also introduced memorable new characters, including Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu and Joe Locke as William Kaplan/Billy Maximoff, further cementing her ties to Marvel’s magical lore. Throughout its run, Agatha All Along captured fans’ imaginations and dominated online conversations.

Unsurprisingly, the show was a massive success. According to Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, it became Disney+’s most-watched show during its premiere week and had the highest audience retention rate of any MCU series to date. Its clever use of practical effects over CGI not only gave it a unique visual identity but also made it Marvel’s most budget-friendly series.

Despite this achievement, Agatha All Along was always intended as a one-season story, much to fans’ dismay. Jac Schaeffer, the series creator, opted for a standalone narrative arc. Still, Agatha’s story isn’t quite over—Marvel confirmed her appearance in What If…? Season 3, leaving fans with more to look forward to.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Kathryn Hahn reflected on what Agatha All Along meant to her. “Even though obviously now Billy/Wiccan is not her son, there is some sort of hope for her that she’s able to maybe do for him what she couldn’t do for Nicky,” she shared, hinting at Agatha’s maternal instincts and her connection with Billy Maximoff. Hahn also revealed her affection for co-star Joe Locke, calling him a “madly talented” actor.

For Hahn, the series served as a fitting farewell to Agatha Harkness, a character she cherished deeply. “In my mind, this was a beautiful and satisfying way to say goodbye to this incredible character I had to play,” she said. The show’s emotionally intimate finale stood out in a franchise known for louder endings, offering something refreshingly “small and tender.” Hahn expressed gratitude to Marvel Studios for allowing her to explore Agatha’s emotional depth in such a personal way.

But what lies ahead for Agatha in the MCU? Her next confirmed appearance is in What If…? Season 3, premiering on December 22, 2024. The fan-favorite animated anthology explores alternate realities in the Marvel Universe, giving new twists to familiar characters. From Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) as a super-soldier to T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) as Star-Lord, What If…? has brought fresh perspectives to the franchise since its 2021 debut.

Season 3 promises more of the same imaginative storytelling, with Agatha appearing in at least one episode. A teaser trailer revealed her in a storyline alongside Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo from Eternals. Although Hahn initially claimed she knew nothing about her inclusion in the series, the trailer confirms she is indeed voicing Agatha.

Hahn won’t be the only familiar MCU face returning to What If…? this season. Many live-action actors will reprise their roles for the animated series, although not everyone is back—most notably, Robert Downey Jr. will not voice Doctor Doom, with another actor stepping into the role. Episodes will air daily from December 22 through December 29, marking the show’s final chapter.

As the story of Agatha All Along concludes, fans are left wondering whether this marks the end of Agatha Harkness in live-action form. Will Kathryn Hahn return to weave her magical mischief in future MCU projects? For now, fans can revel in her performance in Agatha All Along, streaming exclusively on Disney+.

About Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
